AT&T customers who have jailbroken their iPhone by using the tethering option unofficially seem to have received a reminder message from AT&T.

“They were informed them that they’re planning to update their plan to a tethering plan ($45/mo, incl. 4GB),” as reported by TiPb.

AT&T had sent customers using unofficial tethering options an email back in March stating that “records show that you use [tethering] but are not subscribed to our tethering plan”

According to iPhonehacks:

“AT&T had started offering the official tethering plans for $20 per month in June 2010, almost a year after the feature was introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 by Apple.”

“Due to the delay, developers had released jailbreak apps that enabled tethering for a one-time fee, which are very popular. MyWi also allows users to convert their iPhone into a wireless router just like the personal hotspot feature in iOS 4.3 released last week. It is also one of major reasons users jailbreak their iPhone.”

Here are some of the letter send by AT&T to several MyWi users to crack down unofficial use of the tethering option:

[..] Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.
[..] If we don’t hear from you, we’ll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.

Here are the text message sent by AT&T:

AT&T Free Msg: We’ve noticed you’re continuing to enjoy the tethering feature with your smartphone service. Remember, you need a tethering plan ($45/mo, incl. 4GB) to use this feature, so we’re planning to update your line with the required plan soon. Visit att.com/dataplans or call 888-860-6789.
