iPhone Hacked Via SMS

iphone-hack-copyVia a simple SMS, the iPhone can be hacked, according to Cjarlie Miller. Miller is a well-known securityspecialist and author of the Mac Hacker’s Handbook. Via the SMS vulnerability you’ll get access to the root of the iPhone. The SMS leak will give the attacker the possiblity to activate certain code via an SMS-message sent to you, Miller mentioned on the SyScan exchange.

The code can for example, track the location of the phone, turn-on the microphone or totally block it. By sending several SMS-messages written in binary code, an entire program can be send. This program then can get access to the root of the iPhone, causing lots of trouble.

Such leaks in applications are not that bad, because the applications run in their own sandbox. Imagine such a sandbox as an island where all bridges to the shore are up and not accessible.

Apple’s working on a patch for the SMS vulnerability. That patch is expected to be ready at the end of this month. After the patch is released, Miller will describe further details about the leak on the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.

There’s also a positive side to all this. Miller tells that the version of OS X for the iPhone is still safer than the entire OS X for desktops and laptops. That’s because applications like Java and Flash are not available on the iPhone OS.

“The iPhone is more secure than OS X, but SMS could be a critical vulnerability,” says Miller.

iphone_31_beta-300x99Apple has seeded developers of their iPhone Developer Program with beta version of iPhone OS 3.1 (build number is 7C97D) and iPhone SDK.

Apple hasn’t provided much details about the improvements expected in iPhone OS 3.1 but developers have already stumbled upon some interesting changes in the latest iPhone OS.
According to developers following changes in iPhone OS 3.1:

* Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…”
* Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
* iPhone vibrates when moving icons
* Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
* Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
* Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
* APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them.

There are also reports that MMS feature is enabled for AT&T users but it does not work as for some reason it hangs and fails before MMS goes out.

The iPhone Dev team has also warned users who are interested in unlocking their iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS should avoid updating their iPhone with iPhone OS 3.1 (including iPhone OS 3.1 beta) until they release tools to update firmware without updating the baseband. They have also clarified that the warning does not apply to first generation iPhone users as it uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not Ultrasn0w.

This is a compriehnsive step-by-step guide which lets you Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone 3.0

swipeGmail web app supports swipe-to-archive feature. This eliminated the need of separate app for gmail on iPhone. With iPhone 3.0, they’ve added swiping gestures within the iPhone’s browser.

Google’s Gmail blog reads:

After reading the subject of an email and the first line of the message, I often know if I don’t need to open the email to read the rest. With swipe-to-archive, I can simply swipe my finger across the email in the inbox, either from left-to-right or right-to-left, and then tap on the red ‘Archive’ button when it appears. Please note, this feature is only available for the iPhone.
