How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 Using Greenpois0n (Windows).

Here are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 using Greenpois0n for Windows. Greenpois0n has been updated to support the iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2.1 firmware. Use Limera1n if you want to jailbreak iOS 4.0, iOS 4.0.1, iOS 4.0.2.

Step 1.
Open your web browser of choice and navigate to http://www.greenpois0n.com. Click the Windows link at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2.
When prompted save the download to your desktop

Step 3.
Double click the downloaded greenpois0n-osx_rc5.zip file to extract the archive then double click greenpois0n from the desktop to launch the application

Step 4.
Connect your iPhone to the computer, power it off, then click the large Jailbreak button

Step 5.
You will now be instructed on how to place your iPhone into DFU mode.
press and hold the sleep button for 3 seconds.

Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.

You will then be prompted to release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding the Home button.

Step 6.
Once your iPhone is successfully in DFU mode the jailbreak will begin. You can release the Home button. Click the Complete button to close the application.

Step 7.
After the iPhone restarts you’ll notice a new Loader application on your Springboard. Press to launch it.

Step 8.
Press to select Cydia then press the large Install Cydia button that appears.

Step 9.
Once Cydia has installed successfully you can remove Loader by pressing the Options button then the large red Remove Loader.app button.

Step 10.
Restart your iPhone then run Cydia. Let it do all the necessary updates then follow our Unlock tutorial if possible for your device.

F0recast is a free tool that will check your iPhone and iPod touch to determine whether it is tethered, or unlockable (for iPhone only). The tool also show your iPhone’s serial number, boot loader version and model. If your iPhone is unlockable, F0recast also advises the corresponding unlock tool (e.g. blacksn0w).

The tool only works on Microsoft Windows and requires to have .NET framework 2.0, as well as, iTunes 9.0 (or up) installed. To use the tool, simply launch it and connect your iPhone via USB. The F0recast app instantly shows you the jailbreaking-related info.

iPhone developer Pandav have been in the media’s spotlight for some time lately, because they claim to have spotted usage records for an unreleased iPhone in their app’s analytics.

The analytic tool used to spot the new iPhone is PinchMedia and it allows you to break down customers usage and it also allows you to see what specific device that is being used to run your applications and every devices have their own identification number assigned by Apple, and in this case the device identification number spotted was “iPhone3,1” and it doesn’t match up with any shipping iPhones.

The newest iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, has the identification number “iPhone2,1” and was also spotted in statistics and logs more than half a year before its announcement. Yesterday the iPhone DevTeam released the latest version of PwnageTool. Unfortunately it is still for Mac users only. Here you can download custom 3.1 firmwares for your 3Gs, but read the rules before downloading.

First thing you need to do is to jailbreak your iPhone 3Gs using firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1. If you are on 3.1 , you need to downgrade (if you can) otherwise jailbreak for OS 3.1 WILL NOT WORK!

The iPhone 3Gs is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3Gs out of the box. If your iPhone 3Gs has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

Q: Why there is a 500 MB custom firmware and a 1 GB custom firmware? What’s the difference?
A: The amount of apps you can install is greater on the 1GB version, the amount of music etc you can use is greater on a 500MB version.

Q: What’s the difference between activated and unactivated custom firmware? Which one should i use?

A Rogers Wireless iPhone compression website confirms to sweet rumor and alleged screenshots of the company’s internal retail software revealing a 8 GB iPhone 3GS model. Now, this “iPhone Comparison” tab on Rogers’ iPhone 3GS page contains a chart listing the features of the iPhone 3G and 3GS, noting near the bottom that the 3GS is available in 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB capacities.

Boy Genius Report has received several tips that Rogers Wireless, Apple’s Canadian iPhone partner, is in the process of shipping an 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS to its retail stores. BGR has also received several photos of what appear to be an internal memo in Rogers’ retail computer system announcing the transition to the new model to staff members.

We’ve had a number of unconfirmed tips over the last few days about this so we figured we’d post it? apparently it seems that Rogers in Canada is in the process of shipping iPhone 3GS 8GB flavor handsets to stores. Again, unconfirmed, no idea on pricing (we have no clue where to start on that) but we felt it was newsworthy to at least let you guys know what we’re hearing.

According to the screenshots, it appears that Rogers is attempting to sell through its existing inventory of the 8 GB iPhone 3G before transitioning to the iPhone 3GS as a replacement at the 8 GB level.

In our previous articles, we have covered the specifications of  Apple’s new iPhone 3GS and it was no secret that Apple’s new iPhone 3GS is a faster version of iPhone 3G.

The speed and performance of iPhone 3GS were attributed to faster CPU, more RAM, improved graphics etc. But a recent study carried out by iPhone app dev , Tap Tap Tap reveals that the increased RAM in iPhone 3GS was probably not given the importance it deserved.

The study conducted and published on their blog reveals that the 256 MB RAM in iPhone 3GS is one of the biggest factors behind the overall improved performance of Apple’s new iPhone.

Here is an overview of the different components found in iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Central processing Unit (CPU)
iPhone 3G: ARM 11, 412 MHz
iPhone 3GS: ARM Cortex, 600 MHz

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
iPhone 3G: PowerVR MBX Lite
iPhone 3GS: PowerVR SGX

Random Access Memory (RAM)
iPhone 3G: 128 MB
iPhone 3GS: 256 MB

It is noticeable that in comparison to all the above mentioned improvements, the RAM has increased by double. The iPhone app developer has observed that this actually translates into 4X to 10X more available memory in comparison to that of the iPhone 3G.

The older iPhone models have been often considered underpowered when it comes to RAM, so even though the RAM amount is technically doubled, in actual use, you’ll often be working with 4x to 10x the amount of free RAM. And that’s one major aspect that’s contributing to the overall speedier feel of the 3GS.

This conclusion was drawn after folks at Tap Tap Tap carried out the following tests:

Standard Conditions:

1. Both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were running an app named ‘Memory Status’. This app displays the usage of RAM on the iPhone.

2. Both the iPhones are tested at two stages, once during the start up and once after the iPhones have been used for a few minutes.

3. Both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were running the following application after the startup test is done:

• MobileMail (Mail)
• MobileMusicPlayer (iPod)
• MobilePhone (Phone)
• BTServer (Bluetooth server)
• SpringBoard (manages your home screen)
• Accessoryd (controls accessories connected through the dock connector)
• Aosnotifyd (controls MobileMe syncing)
• Mediaserverd (controls audio mixing)

The Memory Status App that is used for this study consists of the following memory states:

• Wired and Active indicate the memory that is in use.

• Inactive and Free indicate the memory that is currently available on the iPhone.

Stage 1: iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS during startup

You will notice that the iPhone 3GS has about 156 MB of memory available during startup. If you look at the available memory on iPhone 3G during startup, it is just under 40 MB.

This means that the iPhone 3GS gives the users 4x the memory in comparison to iPhone 3G.

Stage 2: iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G after use (after startup)

With a list of iPhone Apps being used on both the iPhones, the iPhone 3GS comes out as a clear winner. Because of the repeated usage of the listed applications, the available RAM of iPhone 3GS has dropped down to about 122 MB. The Safari browser was still running on iPhone 3GS when this drop was noticed.

Now, if you look at available memory in case of iPhone 3G then you will notice that it has actually reduced to a meager 13 MB.

This shows that the iPhone 3GS gives the users almost 10X the memory in comparison to iPhone 3G.

The speed of iPhone 3GS is attributed to other factors as well but the clear comparison of available memory in both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G goes to show the significant impact that increased RAM has made in Apple’s latest iPhone.

TwitVid is a new application that allows you to send videos from your iPhone 3GS to your Twitter account.

TwitVid is very simple to use. Launch the app, select a video to upload or record a new one, tap “choose”, add your tweet’s text and that’s it. It will send the tweet with a short link to your video.

When people click on the link, they are taken to TwitVid’s website where they can watch the video, and even chat about it. The video and the chat-room can be embedded in any website, which I think is a really cool feature.

If people click on the video link from an iPhone (i.e. Tweetie), it will launch the video directly from the app and return to it at the end of the video.

Guide: Unlock iPhone 3GS using Ultrasn0w is a post from: The Apple Bites

This guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w. After jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS, you will be able to unlock it using UltraSn0w should you want to. Note that this tutorial is for the iPhone 3GS but the steps are the same for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Read this for more information about the jailbreak that best fits your needs. This was done on a PC but I assume the steps are the same for Mac and Linux.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS Guide:

1. First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. If you have to update iTunes, make sure you restart your computer after installing the latest iTunes.

2. On your desktop, create a folder called “jailbreak iPhone 3GS” or whatever you want to call it. In this folder, download firmware 3.0 for your iPhone 3GS and RedSn0w 0.8 from here. Unzip the RedSn0w folder.

3. Launch RedSn0w and browse for the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in the previous step. RedSn0w should be processing the chosen firmware and tell you that the IPSW was “successfully identified”. Click Next.

4. RedSn0w will start working for a few seconds and then will ask you what you would like to install. You can install Cydia and Icy. I highly suggest you only install Cydia. Choose Cydia and click Next.

5. We’ll now have to connect the iPhone 3GS in recovery mode. To do so, unplug it from your computer, turn it off and wait a few seconds. Then hold the home button while plugin your iPhone to the USB cable. Keep holding the home button until the “Connect to iTunes” image appears.

6. Your iPhone will then go into recovery mode and that’s when the magic happens… RedSn0w will install the jailbreak, which may take a few minutes.

7. Your iPhone will restart and install a bunch of stuff. . Even though RedSn0w says “Done!”, wait until the very end to click “Finish”.

8. After a few minutes, your iPhone will restart. Then click “Finish”.

9. Go to your iPhone springboard and you should see the Cydia icon. Note that the icon may be on the second or third page on your springboard.

10. Done!

It took me about 10 minutes to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS, including time to take screenshots and write this tutorial. It was from far the quickest and most painless jailbreak.

The Dev Team posted a message yesterday suggesting that iPhone 3GS owners should prepare their device for jailbreak.

Remember we warned you to stay away from any updates to 3.1 if you want to be able to jailbreak or unlock your 3GS.

Well this is an additional message to all you 3GS owners that would like to jailbreak your device sometime soon, but this advice comes with a warning! A warning that if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, you will not be able to use Ultransn0w, so please re-read and double check this warning at the bottom of this post before proceeding.

During the restore process iTunes nicely keeps these oh-so-top-secret-files in a lovely accessible place for us to copy out and backup, that place?  /tmp on Mac OS X or %TEMP% on Windows.  Thanks Apple — handy!

The downside to this approach is that you actually need to go through the restore process to get these signed files, which has risks if you are anywhere near 3.1 or 3.1 beta

Jump the break for instructions on how to get the iBEC and iBSS of your iPhone 3GS.

These instructions will show you how to capture your iPhone 3GS iBEC and iBSS which will be required for a future 3GS jailbreak on a Windows computer. Sorry Mac owners…

1. Create a folder called “Jailbreak 3GS” or whatever name you want on your desktop. Download the firmware 3.0 for iPhone 3GS from our iPhone downloads page. Keep this folder open.

2. Go to Start > Run > and enter %temp%

3. Your temp folder will show up on the screen. Now make sure hidden folders are showed, and that the items in the folder are sorted by “date modified”, from most recent to oldest. Keep this folder open.

4. Launch iTunes and plug your iPhone to your computer.

5. Now we need to put your iPhone into DFU mode, in order to capture your iBSS and iBEC.

6. Make sure iTunes is opened and that your iPhone is plugged in. To put your iPhone into DFU mode, press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time for 10 seconds. After exactly 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button. Keep holding the home button until iTunes tells you it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

7. Click OK and hold down the Shift key and click Restore at the same time. A window will show up. Browse to the “Jailbreak 3GS” folder you created in step 1 and select the iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file.

8. You will get a warning message. Click Restore.

9. As the restore process is going on, look at the Temp folder. A new folder will show up with a name resembling Per149.tmp (note: your name might be different but look similar to this). Copy this folder and paste it in your Jailbreak 3GS folder. Remember, you have to act fast as this folder will soon be deleted.

10. Once the restore has completed, iTunes will let you either set up your iPhone as a new phone, or restore from backup. I chose to restore from backup so all my settings are intact.

You’re done! You have successfully captured your iBEC and iBSS.To make sure you’ve done this properly, look inside the Per149.tmp folder you copy/pasted. Go to Firmware > dfu >and you should see 2 files: iBEC.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu and iBSS.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu.

Keep them somewhere on your computer for a future jailbreak.

It took me 2 tries to make this work. The first time, it would only save my iBEC. Make sure you act quickly when the folder appears in your temp folder.

A tool has been released to automatically grab your iBEC and iBSS but I haven’t tried it so I can’t tell you if it works or not.
