“Amazon EC2, which hosts Cydia’s internal website, has been having extreme issues for – 40 hours. This outage affects the ability to purchase paid products, the Theme Center, and Manage Account. I (saurik) have been sleeping in hour-and-a-half shifts since this outage began in order to keep a dialog open with Amazon “Premium Support” regarding this issue. Recently, enough access was recovered in order for me to modify the home page to add this message.”

“Unfortunately, Amazon’s status and ETAs have been confusingly vague and highly optimistic throughout the experience, causing me to be unable to make good decisions about disaster recovery choices. At this time, the latest news from Amazon AWS (as of two hours ago) was “that this will take 3-4 hours until full access is restored.” Meanwhile, Premium Support has asked engineering to prioritize recovering Cydia’s infrastructure. Here are the steps that has to be followed in-order to auto install a DEB file using Cydia.

Please remember that in-order to follow these steps you need to have jailbroken iPhone along with install OpenSSH, and also Fugu.

Step 1.
The firs step require you to launch Fugu from a Applications folder.

Step 2.

Now input the iPhone’s IP Address in the Connect: add, enter root as the Username, then click the Connect button.

Step 3.

When prompted input alpine as the password and click Authenticate.

Step 4.

Click the Go To… button from the Fugu toolbar.

Step 5.

Input /var/root/Media as the location to Go To. Make sure Remotely is selected then click the Go button.

Step 6.

If you do not have a Cydia folder in the /var/root/Media folder, you will need to create one.

Click the New Folder button on the Fugu toolbar.

Input Cydia as the New Directory Name. Now set the directory to be created Remotely then click the Create button.

Step 7.

Double click the AutoInstall folder to enter the directory.

Step 8.

If you do not have a AutoInstall folder in the /var/root/Media/Cydia folder, you will need to create one.

Click the New Folder button on the Fugu toolbar.

Input AutoInstall as the New Directory Name. Set the directory to be created Remotely then click the Create button.

Step 9.

Double click the AutoInstall folder to enter the directory.

Step 10.

Now use the left pane in Fugu to navigate to the location of the DEB files you would like to install

Step 11.

Drag the DEB files from the left pane to the right pane.

Step 12.

Once done then you must power off and on your iPhone twice. You will then see the applications installed on your Springboard and in Cydia Installer.

Note:Please remember that you must have a Jailbroken device in-order to follow this tutorial.

Step 1.
The first step require you to tap to launch Cydia from your iPhone Springboard and choose Manage from the tabs at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2.
Again tap to select the large Sources button

Step 3.
Press the Edit button (top right of the screen).

Once the program has opened you can use the Setup button at the top left to enable Fast Read as well as set the SIM name format. ie Firstname/Lastname or Lastname/First name.

Step 12.
To read your contacts from the SIM card press the Read from SIM button at the bottom of the screen. Now press to select a contact and choose to Modify, Delete, or Import it.

Step 13.
To add a contact to your SIM card you can press the + button at the bottom of the main screen. Navigate through your contacts and select the one you would like to add.

You will notice that the contact has been added to the list and appears on a green background. This means that when you write to the SIM card this contact will be added and when done the contact now appears on a black background similar to the other contacts in your list.

Step 14.
SIManager also allows you to copy all the contacts on your iPhone to the SIM card. Press the Gear icon at the bottom of the screen then press the large Copy iPhone to SIM button. You will be asked to confirm this action. Press the OK button.

Step 15.
You can also use SIManager to empty your SIM card. Press the Gear icon at the bottom of the screen then press the Empty SIM button. Press the OK button to confirm the action.

Notice all the numbers to be deleted have a red background. Press the Write to SIM button to commit the changes.

Once done your list of contacts on the SIM card will be empty.

Backgrounder is a Mobile Substrate-based extension to Apple’s SpringBoard application launcher that allows applications to run in the background (applications are normally terminated upon suspension)

The Backgrounder app is available for download from Cydia, your one stop source for all jailbroken apps. Once installed, you can send any app to background simply by holding the Home button until you get a pop up showing “Backgrounding Enabled.” Release the Home button after you see the dialog and you’ll go back to the home menu but the app you’ve put into the background will continue to run.
To close the app, start it up again (and you’ll be at exactly where you left it) and hold the Home button again, this time until you get a dialog showing “Backgrounding Disabled.” After releasing the button, the app will close and you’ll go back to the home menu.

OpenSSH

Open SSH is a background utility that allows users to connect their iDevices over wi-fi to the Mac or PC. To use OpenSSH you will need a client programme on your machine such as WinSCP for windows. This will then allow you to log into your iDevice and look through the directories.

OpenSSH is a great tool for theme developers as it allows them to install their theme to test it out before they release it to the public.

OpenSSH is free and is a great way to mod files on your idevice. Please be aware though that you can do potential damage with OpenSSH if you are unsure what you are doing with it.

LockInfo

LockInfo is a useful app that allows you to add information to your lockscreen such as; weather information, upcoming calendar events, missed calls, missed text messages and new emails.

Once installed, you can find LockInfo in your stock Settings application. The application is extremely customizable and has some pretty cool features.

In the settings you are able to turn on/off a Lockscreen and Homescreen option. A few other cool option include the ability to adjust the transparency of the mod, the ability to choose how you would like the Media Controls to display within the mod

It is well designed and the effect on the “collapsing” feature is smooth. Overall, the app is wonderful and worth using it.

ProSwitcher

ProSwitcher is a free Cydia app for multitasking on iPhone. The app is a front end to the app backgrounder. It allows users to easily switch between apps with a simple gesture.The app comes from the Palm Pre WebOS idea and looks similar.

The app uses a libary called libactivator and allows users to pick a gesture to start Proswitcher running. This could be anything from a double tap of the status bar to pinching the icons on the Springboard

May be i am not the only one who gets frustrated or annoyed with the need of connecting USB data cable to our computer and iPhone (or any other iOS device) and then sync the phone data to iTunes.

If yes then I should tell you that you are in a treat with a new Cydia store application that allows to wirelessly synchronize your iOS devices and iTunes (on Windows or Mac).

Step 1.
Launch Cydia from the springboard.

Step 2.
Tap on the Search tab in the bottom.

Step 3.
In the Search box, type Wi-Fi Sync.

Step 4.
Open Wi-Fi Sync.

Step 5.
Install the Cydia application on your device which comes for $9.99. The price might be on the steeper side, but it’s worth it if you have to sync your phone to iTunes on a regular basis.

Step 6.
After you have purchased the application, simply install it by tapping on install and then confirming it.

Step 7.
Now once the application is installed, open Safari from the springboard.

Step 8.
Open Wi-Fi Sync from the springboard on your device.

Step 9.
Open iTunes on your PC.

Note: You would be able to Sync your iPhone to iTunes only if both the handset and the PC are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Step 10.
Now, pair the device with the PC once both the applications are open and you are set to go.

Earlier, an iPhone app was available on the iTunes App Store, but was quickly removed as it presented to violate Apple’s iTunes Store Terms of Service. It has now returned on Cydia for free; however the app requires a VIP subscription ($3/month through Grooveshark).

Jailbreak your iDevice, how? Here is something, with which changes are possible in the iDevice application icons, wallpaper, dock, status bar, chat bubbles, weather backgrounds, keyboards and what not.

More than 784,000 iPhone unlocked with UltraSnow. But the recent Ultrasnow updated version 0.9.3 has come up to help unlock iPhone running iOS4. Of course before installing it the iPhone has to be jailbreaked and RedSnow is only the available tool in the market which does that for now.

The new version works for iPhone which has a base band ranging between 04.26.08 via 05.13.04. But the really worry comes when your warranty becomes void after installation.

People have already come up with complains stating that as soon as they install the UltraSnow, no signal warning pop up the screen. If you are going to get one then go to Cydia stores and make yourself clear before adding a repo at the stores keeping in mind the problem showing up with the service.

No doubt the software will help you in customizing your iDevices but negative consequences have also thrown up in the way.

Saurik, the creator of Cydia, has come up with a way to downgrade the iPhone 3GS from firmware 3.1 to firmware 3.0. The method is not for the faint of heart but it can be a life saver if you accidentally upgraded your iPhone 3GS to 3.1. Saurik did a great job at explaining how and why this downgrade works and I invite you to read his article for detailed information. On my part, I will only give you a step by step on how to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0.

1. First and foremost, you must have saved your ECID file through Cydia. If this was done, you should see the following message at the top of Cydia’s homepage: This iPhone 3G[S] has an ECID SHSH on file.

2. Now we’re going to duplicate the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server and trick iTunes into thinking it is connected to Apple’s servers. Make sure you have iTunes 9 installed on your computer.

On a Mac, go to /etc/hosts. On a PC, go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Open the file in a text editor and add the following entry at the bottom of the file: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Save the file and close it.

3. Now we have to put your iPhone into DFU mode. To do this, open iTunes, plug your iPhone and hold down the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, then let go of the power button but continue to hold the home button until iTunes recognizes the device with the message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.” Your iPhone screen should be completely black. If you see an image on your screen, you most likely didn’t perform the previous step correctly. Try again.

4. You can now do a “normal” restore to the 3.0 software. To do this, hold down the Option key (on Mac OS X) or the SHIFT key (Windows) while clicking the Restore button in iTunes. Select the firmware 3.0 (which can be downloaded here).

Theoretically, you should be done with the downgrade. That’s just for the theory though… You’re most likely going to get several errors.

If you get the “unknown error (3002)”, it’s because you probably don’t have your ECID SHSH’s for 3.0 on file with Cydia and it is unfortunately impossible to register your device with Cydia anymore. There is no solution, your iPhone can’t be downgraded from 3.1 to 3.0 and you’re gonna have to wait for a new jailbreak.

If you get the “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1015)” error, then re-do the process all over again. You will get the same error again and it is normal. Ignore the error and jailbreak your iPhone using RedSn0w.

I agree that this is definitely not the easiest way to downgrade your iPhone from firmware 3.1 to firmware 3.0, but you don’t have much choice at this point. If you don’t feel like taking on this project, I suggest you just wait for a proper 3.1 jailbreak, which may take days, weeks, or months. I am very confident that the jailbreak community is getting closer to a 3.1 jailbreak though.

I know, I know iPhone can get boring. Every time you see the same springboard, every time you see the same wallpaper when somebody is calling you. Yeah , you can install themes, and that can inject some rainbows and butterflies on your iphone, but how cool would it be if you would have a video background on your springboard? And how would you like to have a video ringtone?

That would be badass huh? Well, in a few painless steps, you can have all of that. Check this :

• open cydia
• search for vWallpaper
• install vWallpaper ( now, before you tap confirm make sure it will install vWallpaper and SkrewCommon. By default it does, but, if you wont get a 8-9 megs download and a new icon on your springboard make sure u install SkrewCommon as well ) ( how can u make sure that by installing vWallpaper you install both : well on the confirm screen check what message you get under Modifications – Installing )

That’s it , congrats. Videos are available for download from within the application, along with video ringtones. Also, you may use videos downloaded from MxTube. You can manually upload videos that you want to use via SSH. Just upload any .mp4 file onto

/private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/vRingtones

or

/private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/VWBackground

Just to make sure :

upload .mp4 videos for ringtones in /private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/vRingtones
upload .mp4 videos for background in /private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/VWBackground

NOTE :

• You must disable User Wallpaper in Winterboard for it to display
• If you got a theme, you must :

1. ssh onto iphone and delete or rename that theme’s wallpaper
2. use Mobile Finder, and rename the file

On PC or Mac, you can easily reboot it using a couple of mouse click. But there is no direct way to reboot your iPhone. A hack called GPower targets to On top of the built-in “Slide to Power” function, GPower is a new cydia application that adds “Slide to Reboot” and “Slide to Respring” features to iPhone.

Normally, to reboot your iPhone, you’ll need to first power it of and then turn it back on again. With GPower, it adds options to let you slide to reboot.

To install GPower, launch Cydia and tap “Search” button. Search for “GPower” and install it. Once installed, you can simply press and hold the “Power/Sleep” button to invoke it.

Same as other hacks, GPower only works on jailbroken iPhone and it also supports iPhone 3.0.

Cydia Store has been opened for business for around three weeks. Have anyone purchased any Cydia Application from Cydia Store? I bought the first paid application – Cyntact from Cydia Store. The shopping experience from Cydia Store is very different from App Store. And, here I’d like to walk you through how you can purchase a paid Cydia application.

If you’re already using Jailbroken iPhone, you should have used Cydia to download free iPhone application. Cydia Store is just an extension of the original Cydia application that lets you to purchase paid application, which can’t make into the Apple’s App Store.

Shopping on Cydia Store

By launching Cydia, you’d see a “Cydia Store: Products” button. Tap on it will bring to the Cydia Store.

To show you the shopping experience of Cydia Store, I purchased the Cyntact application. What’s this app about? Wait… I’ll show you after the walkthrough.

Now when you select a paid application in Cydia, you’ll see the same package screen that shows the package description but the “Install” button is replaced by the “Purchase” button.

Show Your Identity

Before you can purchase paid application, Cydia Store requires you to show your identity. Unlike Apple’s App Store, Cydia Store does not require you to register an account. Instead, you can choose to use your Facebook or Google account to logon the store.

As for this walkthrough, I logged on via my Facebook ID. Simply tap “Connect with Facebook”, Cydia will bring you to the logon interface of Facebook. Select “Log into Cydia” and sign in with your Facebook account.

Once authenticated, Cydia store requests you to link the device with your Cydia account forpurchase authorization.

Proceed to Payment

Next, you’ll have to make the payment. Presently, Cydia Store only supports payment via Amazon and Paypal. But if you opt for Paypal, you’ll be charged an addition of 25 cents. So, like me, you’ll probably opt for Amazon Payment to save money.

By tapping “Pay $1.00 Now”, you’ll be brought to Amazon Payment. If you already have an Amazon account, simply logon using the registered email address. Otherwise, register a new one. Next, type in the Credit Card information and proceed to confirmation.

Almost complete… Install the Application

Once you confirm the payment, you’ll be brought back to the Cyntact package screen. But this time, the “Purchase” button is changed to “Install” button. And, you can go ahead to install Cyntact on iPhone.

Cyntact – The First Paid Application on Cydia Store

So, what’s Cyntact? Cyntact is the first paid application released on Cydia Store. It tweaks the iPhone Contacts application and displays a profile thumbnail in the contact list. That’s really simple.

That’s how you purchase an app from Cydia Store. As you see from the walkthrough, buying an iPhone app on Cydia store takes much more steps, as compared with App Store. Many suggested that Cydia Store is a potential threat to Apple’s App Store. Base on my shopping experience, however, the developers of Cydia store will need to work harder and provide iPhone user a better shopping experience in order to compete with App Store.

Last time, I mentioned I will write up a series of blog posts for jailbreak beginner to answer the question – What’s next after you jailbreak the iPhone? This is the 1st article for jailbreak beginner series that helps you unleash the power of jailbreak iPhone.

Cydia is the 1st Stop after Jailbreak

With iPhone Jailbreak, Cydia will be the first application you need to know and start with. One of top reasons to jailbreak iPhone is to enpower it to install third-party applications. And, Cydia, developed by Jay Freeman, is the heart of all. You may consider Cydia as the App Store forjailbreak iPhone, that lets you download and install third-party applications on iPhone.

Why Cydia and 3rd-Party applications?

As you know, since the release of firmware 2.0, Apple enables every iPhone with the game-changing App Store. Developers can put up application on App Store for every iPhone user to download. Okay then, what’s the point to have Cydia? The short answer is not everyapplication can get through Apple’s approval process and appear in App Store. A very good example is NetShare, which tries to turn iPhone 3G into a wireless modem, that was banned by Apple for some reasons. Cydia is here to fill the gap and lets you download other 3rd party applications that you probably can’t find on App Store.

Launching Cydia for the very first time

Cydia is very easy to use and manage. If you know how to use App Store, you’ll have no difficulties with Cydia. The first time you launch Cydia, you’ll be asked to select the type of filter:

1. User (Graphical Only)
2. Hacker (+Command Line)
3. Developer (No filter)

For normal user, you can just set the filter to “User”. With this setting, Cydia will filter out those applications which you’re not interested.

Followed by the filter setting, you may be prompted to upgrade some essential packages. Just go ahead to upgrade it. This makes sure you’re using the latest version of Cydia.

A Glance at Cydia

Okay, now you should be in Cydia. Let’s have a quick glance at Cydia interface. Cydia offers an intuitive interface for you to manage application packages:

Home – The home screen shows the latest news ofCydia. You’ll also find featured packages, sources information, user guide and other developer-related information here.

Section – You can find all the available applications for download here. Application packages are organized into specific categories.

Changes – What’s the new application just released onCydia? “Changes” shows you the latest release available and also alerts you for any application upgrade.

Manage – Keep track with all the installed package. You can use “Manage” to upgrade / uninstall packages. Also, it is the place to add / remove Cydia source (will cover more later on).

How to install an application in Cydia

So, how do you install an application in Cydia? Pretty straightforward.

1. First, locate the application package. Say, MxTube in featured application.
2. Just tap “Install” button and then tap “Confirm” to confirm the installation
3. And Cydia then download the package & install it automatically.

Yes, it’s so simple.

How to upgrade / uninstall an application in Cydia

As said, all installed packages can be found under “Manage”. To upgrade / uninstall anapplication,

1. Tap “Manage” and then “Packages”.
2. Select the package you want to uninstall or upgrade.
3. Tap “Modify” and then “Remove” to uninstall the application package. If an upgrade is available, Cydia will also show you with an “Upgrade” option. Just tap on to upgrade theapplication.

How to add repository source in Cydia

Application in Cydia are hosted by different repositories. From time to time, you may add new repository into Cydia. Say, you find a new repository URL (e.g. http://ispaziorepo.com/cydia/apt) which provides great iPhone themes. And you want to install those themes. To make those applications available in Cydia, you have to install the repository first.

As long as you know the repository URL, add a new repository is very straightforward.

1. Tap “Manage”
2. Then tap “Source”
3. Tap “Edit” and then “Add”
4. Type the repository URL and tap “Add Source”

That’s it. Cydia will then look up the URL and retrieve any applications available from the new repository.

Cydia, by default, comes with a list of package sources (i.e. repository). You can find them in the Home screen of Cydia. Just tap on anyone of them and install.

Do you think Cydia is slow? As a regular user of Cydia, I agree. For most of the time, it takes over 30s (sometimes even a minute) to launch Cydia. Even thoughCydia offers some great jailbreak applications, it’s a bit annoying for its slowness.

Volume Boost boosts your iPhone speaker volume.

Volume Boost is a Cydia App that works only on jailbroken iPhone and supports firmware 2.2, 2.2.1 & 3.0.

Installing Volume Boost

The installation is very straightforward. Simply launch Cydia and search for “Volume Boost”. The application requires Winterboard for activation. So if you do not have Winterboard, Cydia will also install it for you.

After installation, Cydia will automatically reboot your iPhone. To enable volume boost, launch Winterboard and tap on “Volume Boost 3.0?. Then click HOME button to activate the volume boost. You’ll have to wait for 20 – 30 seconds for Winterboard to refresh.

From my test on iPhone 3.0, the Volume Boost only increases the speaker volume slightly but it does boost the volume of your headset. If you experience speaker volume issue, try to test this out and let us know if it works for you.

This guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w. After jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS, you will be able to unlock it using UltraSn0w should you want to. Note that this tutorial is for the iPhone 3GS but the steps are the same for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Read this for more information about the jailbreak that best fits your needs. This was done on a PC but I assume the steps are the same for Mac and Linux.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS Guide:

1. First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. If you have to update iTunes, make sure you restart your computer after installing the latest iTunes.

2. On your desktop, create a folder called “jailbreak iPhone 3GS” or whatever you want to call it. In this folder, download firmware 3.0 for your iPhone 3GS and RedSn0w 0.8 from here. Unzip the RedSn0w folder.

3. Launch RedSn0w and browse for the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in the previous step. RedSn0w should be processing the chosen firmware and tell you that the IPSW was “successfully identified”. Click Next.

4. RedSn0w will start working for a few seconds and then will ask you what you would like to install. You can install Cydia and Icy. I highly suggest you only install Cydia. Choose Cydia and click Next.

5. We’ll now have to connect the iPhone 3GS in recovery mode. To do so, unplug it from your computer, turn it off and wait a few seconds. Then hold the home button while plugin your iPhone to the USB cable. Keep holding the home button until the “Connect to iTunes” image appears.

6. Your iPhone will then go into recovery mode and that’s when the magic happens… RedSn0w will install the jailbreak, which may take a few minutes.

7. Your iPhone will restart and install a bunch of stuff. . Even though RedSn0w says “Done!”, wait until the very end to click “Finish”.

8. After a few minutes, your iPhone will restart. Then click “Finish”.

9. Go to your iPhone springboard and you should see the Cydia icon. Note that the icon may be on the second or third page on your springboard.

10. Done!

It took me about 10 minutes to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS, including time to take screenshots and write this tutorial. It was from far the quickest and most painless jailbreak.

How To Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w is a post from: The Apple Bites

There is a new simple hack that allows iPhone 2G users to enable MMS on their iPhone. Your iPhone has to be jailbroken to enable MMS. If you don’t know how to jailbreak your iPhone, please read this.

Now go to Cydia and look for the application called ActivateMMS2G from the iSpazio source. Install and reboot your iPhone and bingo!

There is going to be an alternative to App Store for jailbroken iPhone (competitor to Cydia, Icy and Appulous) using BitTorrent technology. This new app store is called appDowner.

appDowner was created by developer Alec Renolds back in 2008 with the idea to create a simple BitTorrent client for the iPhone. Unfortunately the project was put on hold for a while due to personal issues. But the dev- Renolds, is now back at it and has expanded his original concept to create a complete replacement to Apple’s App Store.

Unlike the App Store, there will be no app approval process and most applications submitted will be available for download within a week. appDowner can also be used as “client for non-app related downloads”, which in other words means you’ll be able to illegally download music directly from the app.

appDowner is still being worked on and it should be available in Cydia for download soon.
