During a tour of AT&T Foundry space in Plano, Texas the company exhibit its upcoming 4G Long Term Evolution Network to GigaOM.

AT&T expects to get ‘real-world’ speeds of around 28 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. That is over double the speeds that Verizon has promised customers. AT&T also convey that in the last four quarters, it has recovered $125 billion in revenue, and billions of dollars in capital investments in its network.

I asked for a demo and got one. The speeds provided on the download side were about 28.87 Mbps, and were about 10.4 Mbps on the upload side. This compared to speeds of 3.77 on the download side and 1.21 Mbps on the upload for an iPhone capable of maxing out on AT&T’s 7.2 Mbps HSPA network. So it’s fast, but sharing those speeds with others on a cell tower will bring them down. For comparison, Verizon has promised customers speeds of 5-12 Mbps on the download side and speeds of up 5 Mbps on the upload side.

Apple is expected to update the iPhone with support for LTE, but still is unclear whether the technology will be ready by this year. Hope in the year end.

We can say that thousands of available apps are a powerful temptation for many iPad buyers, a significant number of users don’t bother with them at all. One major difference in the iPad and the rival tablets being released in its wake is the number and variety of available applications. Apple wasn’t kidding when it patented the phrase, “We have an app for that.” But a recent survey reveals that almost a third of iPad owners haven’t downloaded any apps at all.

The Nielsen Company conducted a survey among 5,000 owners of tablets and smartphones, and discovered that while 63% of iPad owners had downloaded paid apps and another 5% only free apps, 32% had never downloaded an app.

The interesting part is that among those who paid for content, the most popular downloads were games, followed by book, music, shopping and news apps. The store atmosphere of the iTunes App Store are appealing and well I don’t see how they can resist, especially considering the number of apps that are free. Of course, with free apps comes advertising, but most iPad owners don’t seem to mind. The survey revealed that a majority of iPad owners (57%) don’t object to ads when they provide access to free content.

It looks like some of those iPhone apps out there aimed at kids may sometimes manage to fool children into making in-game purchases using a grown-up’s credit card. This reports was taken trough BBC .
Let’s look at the inside of the story;

Matthew is six and a fan of an iPhone app called Tap Resort Party, in which players build their own holiday park. This is a colorful game that seems set for kids, in which you buy properties not with cash but shells.

Now let’s hear what BBC has to say about this,“Dominic agreed to download the free game, but just a few days later, he got a nasty surprise when his credit card company called to warn him of several hundred pounds of unexpected spending on his iTunes account.”

Here Apple responded by saying that App purchase and In-App purchase can be restricted using Parental Controls. Parental Controls also can restrict apps based on app age ratings. In-app purchases and currencies cannot be used to acquire any physical goods, nor can they be used between applications, they can only be used for digital content or services provided by the application.

It seems Matthew had been tapping purchase shells in the game, each time he did the game charged the credit card £59.99. At issue, even though a password is required to download the app, iTunes will then stay logged in for 15 minutes, so you can make in-app purchases within that 15 minute window, and of course, each time you do the window gets extended.

Now the question is how Apple will improve in its app purchasing system to protect users from inadvertent purchases like this?

[Via- 9 to 5 Mac]

I am sure after you get your gift card or promo code for your iPad, you would like to redeem it.

You don’t need to take stress or worried whether you can redeem code because it is quite easy and in fact you don’t even need to sync with iTunes on your computer if you leaving for some urgent work .

You just need to open the App Store from your iPad home screen and scroll down to the bottom of the App Store main screen. There you will see a “Redeem” button. Now tap on the button and you can enter the code you have.

The iTune Music Stores (iTMS) is a multimedia service provider affiliated with Apple. If you are a music lover and can’t do without new music, games and movies releases, here is something for you that you will love. You just need to have an internet connection to grab the exclusive music, movies, TV shows, millions and millions of Application (commonly referred to Apps)

Where do you find these stores: These stores are successfully operating in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Benchmarks: The domain of iTunes is vast.
In April 2007, Apple and EMI announced that EMI’s music would be available DRM-free version at twice the sound quality for $1.29 USD per track, in addition to the traditional DRM tracks for $0.99. Albums and music videos were made available without DRM with no change in price.
In September 2010 they sold…
10 billion songs.
125million TV shows.
7 million movies.

The contents: On October 12th, 2005, Apple announced Video sales through iTunes alongside the release of video-capable iPods. Apple offered over 2000 music videos, 5 television shows and 6 Pixar animated shorts. Each video cost $1.99 (US) each.
Now, they have gone a long ways providing movies of prominent international brand recognized movie maker like Disney and Paramount.

TV shows: ABC’s Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Night Stalker; Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and That’s So Raven, USA’s Monk; NBC’s Law and Order, The Office, Surface, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and “vintage” shows Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dragnet, Adam-12, and Knight Rider; Sci Fi’s Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries.

Macworld San Francisco 2008: iTunes Movie Rentals were announced, with content available from Touchstone, Miramax, MGM, Lionsgate, Newline, Fox, Warner Brothers, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Sony. Library titles are available for $2.99 USD while new releases cost $3.99.

Caution: Apple only allows the purchaser to download a track once, so it is very important to make backup copies. If you lose a song you purchased, you will need to purchase the song again.

Distribution: Individuals cannot sell tracks directly through iTMS; Apple will deal only with record labels and distributors. Unsigned artists can get into the store through independent distribution services like CD Baby.

Limits: A credit card with a billing address in one of those above mentioned countries is needed to purchase songs from iTMS (iTune Stores), but the free services and song previews are generally available to all.

Not often do we review windows applications here on tAB. But for a fine Apple related app as CopyTrans we make an exception.

CopyTrans 4 is the fourth major version of the iPod Backup and media extraction application CopyTrans. With CopyTrans you can easily transfer iPod and iPhone media to your PC. As I found out myself, CopyTrans works for every type of iPod. I connected my first iPod ever, which was a first generation iPod Nano and it synced without issues.

Another remarkable feature is the ability of CopyTrans to read iPods or iPhones which are formatted for Mac OSX. This feature makes it ideal for Mac users who need extraction software on their Windows bootcamp partition. Extracting from a Mac formatted iPod or iPhone happens at the same speed as it does on a Windows formatted iPod, which is very speedy.

With CopyTrans you can extract songs, but that’s not all. You can also rebuild your iTunes library. So let’s say, your computer is bricked and you lost all your music. With CopyTrans you can just rebuild your entire iTunes library from an iPod which was previously synced with your PC.

All songs, video’s audiobooks, podcasts, etc., are extracted containing all information iTunes uses to identify them. Which means all downloaded images, lyrics, play counts and ratings are transferred as well.

The interface is very easy to use, but as a Mac user and someone who is quite enthusiastic about the decent Windows 7 Microsoft delivered I have one remark. The theme of CopyTrans is comparable to the brushed metal theme and this is nice if you like other than default themes and it’s perfectly in line with the Apple-based functionality of this application, but for once Microsoft delivered a beautiful operating system with nice themes and an eye on the aesthetics. So why not use the default transparent theme that Windows 7 supplies? It’s not a big issue, but for people who like the native Windows 7 theme this will be a bit of a downer.

Also when you download the default installer, you are presented with a shortcut to the CopyTrans control center which also shows you haven’t installed yet. WIth a simple click you can go to CopyTrans. But it’s easier to have CopyTrans open directly when you open the shortcut. The developer kindly replied to my request for more information about this decision and I found out that you can just download CopyTrans as a standalone application as well, without the control center.

All an all, this is a wonderful application with just the right amount of features and it’s built in such a way that it’s accessible to all. It works with all iPods and iPhones and does exactly what it is supposed to do. So I give it the tag, highly recommended!

My only wish left would be a Mac OSX version.

You can get a trial version here : http://www.copytrans.net/copytrans.php
And purchase a full version here for 19,99$ : http://www.copytrans.net/purchase.php

Also take a look at the running back to school offer and the other CopyTrans products.

But this isn’t true. Apparently Free apps are less likely to be rated more than 2.5 stars out of 5 than paid apps. A free notepad will get ratings which are approximately 30-50% worse than a paid notepad app with exactly the same features.

If we take a look at the Photography category of the App Store, we come to the following results. The minimum rating for a free App in the Top 100 is 1,5/5, for a paid App this is 2,5/5. When we take a look at the maximum rating we see that for free apps we have a 3,5/5 maximum rating which nearly no free App reaches, most of them are between 1,5/5 and 2,5/5. When we take a look at the top 100 paid photography apps we see that the maximum rating is 4,5/5 which many apps reach.

Do you think this is odd? Well, the explanation is simple. People have a certain limit on their App Store buying behavior. When an App is free they have no limit. They will not read the description and will often just download it when they like the name or icon. When an App is cheap the limit starts to take shape as the user will start to take a look at the screenshots and will start considering the need for the App. With expensive Apps people really consider buying the App for a while and read the review, read the full description, check every screenshot, etc.

When the people in the first category (free App downloaders) discover the App to be useless, because they didn’t read the description, they just delete it and quickly rate it 1/5.
This brings a very poor rating to free Apps. ?People who belong to the other categories (paid App dowloaders) are often more likely to keep the App even if it’s useless and are also more likely to give it a 3-5 stars rating when they delete it. Paid apps will have a higher chance of getting a review as well.

This is also partially the fault of Apple. When do they ask people to rate an App? Right, when the user deletes it. When you delete it in 90% of all cases you don’t like it.

So when you are browsing the App Store, don’t just download apps for the sake of downloading. But take a look at the description. It can save you the pain of deleting it again and it saves developers the pain of seeing 1 out of 5 stars ratings for a perfectly fine App.

It is now possible thanks to an application called Torrentula.

Torrentula is available for download from Cydia, which means you will have to jailbreak your iPhone to use it… The app also requires the latest version of Jiggy Runtime to be installed on your iPhone. Check this out for more information about Jiggy Runtime. After doing that, add the following source in Cydia: http://itouch.rockt.es/repo.xml

Sunburst, the developer of Torrentula explains what to do next:

Download .torrent files to your device with the HistoryDL.app (recommended) or the Safari Download Plugin into the mobile (or root)/Downloads folder. The program will scan your mobile (or root)/Downloads folder for new torrent files, and will import any valid torrent files regardless of their filename or extension. When a torrent has finished downloading from peers it will be automatically moved to mobile (or root)/Media/Downloads when selected. Note: Torrents continue downloading even when program is closed. A device restart can often activate/fix stubborn torrents.

Torrentula will then let you browse torrents site such as MiniNova and will let you download BitTorrents straight to your iPhone.

I haven’t tried this app myself but iPhone Download Blog reader Jenster sent me this tip saying it’s working great. Try it out and let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

I know, I know iPhone can get boring. Every time you see the same springboard, every time you see the same wallpaper when somebody is calling you. Yeah , you can install themes, and that can inject some rainbows and butterflies on your iphone, but how cool would it be if you would have a video background on your springboard? And how would you like to have a video ringtone?

That would be badass huh? Well, in a few painless steps, you can have all of that. Check this :

open cydia

search for vWallpaper

install vWallpaper ( now, before you tap confirm make sure it will install vWallpaper and SkrewCommon. By default it does, but, if you wont get a 8-9 megs download and a new icon on your springboard make sure u install SkrewCommon as well ) ( how can u make sure that by installing vWallpaper you install both : well on the confirm screen check what message you get under Modifications – Installing )

That’s it , congrats. Videos are available for download from within the application, along with video ringtones. Also, you may use videos downloaded from MxTube. You can manually upload videos that you want to use via SSH. Just upload any .mp4 file onto

/private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/vRingtones

or

/private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/VWBackground

Just to make sure :

upload .mp4 videos for ringtones in /private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/vRingtones
upload .mp4 videos for background in /private/var/mobile/media/Skrew/VWBackground

NOTE :

You must disable User Wallpaper in Winterboard for it to display

If you got a theme, you must :

ssh onto iphone and delete or rename that theme’s wallpaper

use Mobile Finder, and rename the file

iPhoneCake is actually an asian blog, that has a subdirectory called appcake as well. Nothing wrong thus far, but that subdirectory is actually a cracked .ipa files “appstore”. Even if you have to translate it into english ( or any other language ) , you wont have any trouble on figure it out how to download the apps. Pretty similar to appulo.us which i presented in the previous post.

NOTE: you will need to create an account for this site. Go to iphonecake.com/bbs/register.php and here is the hottest tip you’ll ever get in your life: use firefox’s ubiquity extension for translation.Just highlight the text you want translated, hit ctrl+space to bring ubiquity up, type ‘tr’ and it auto translates. Hit enter if you want the translation to actually appear on the page. Knock yourself out
