Last month, we reported about Apple’s announcement of a settlement with iPhone 4 users over the Antennagate debacle. Now it is time for compensation.

According to the latest announcement from Apple, from 29 March 2012, those who were involved in this lawsuit, started receiving notices how they could cash in on the $15 that Apple owed them.

The settlement in question pertains only to iPhone 4 owners who were unable to obtain a free bumper case or refused to opt-in to Apple’s free bumper program.

Apple will provide a $15 cash payment to Class Members who send in a valid claim form. The claim form will require you to declare that you: (a) experienced antenna or reception issues with your iPhone 4; (b) were unable to return your iPhone 4 without incurring any costs; (c) were unwilling to use a case or free bumper for your iPhone 4; and (d) completed certain troubleshooting steps or are unable to complete the troubleshooting steps because you no longer own your iPhone 4.

There have been many reports about Apple offering free bumper cases to those who specifically requested them despite the program being over. However, this settlement offers an alternative method of compensation for many iPhone 4 users.

Those eligible for the $15 settlement have until 28 August 2012 to file the proper claim forms. If iPhone 4 users have any objections, they must file their objections by 15 June 2012. A court hearing on 13 July 2012 will consider the settlement for final approval. Those who see $15 as unfit compensation for the headaches of dropped calls and poor reception have until the 15 June 2012 registration date to register for their removal from the class action group. They may pursue their own separate cases after being removed from group.

When you think about buying a smart-phone, your usually prefer to choose from Apple or Samsung. If you are looking for an example of dominance in the mobile handset space, your thoughts are about Apple and Samsung.

On Thursday 22 March 2012, UBS Investment Research published a note to investors showcasing how dominant these two tech giants are when it comes to cleaning up profits in the industry of Mobile Handests.

The report authors found that 9 out of every 10 dollars generated in sales of mobile handsets goes to Apple and Samsung. “The performance disparity between the stronger players – Apple and Samsung – vs. the others remains stark,” the note reads, “and these two now account for over 50% of industry revenues and over 90% of total EBIT.”

The dominance of Apple and Samsung in mobile handset in mobile handset industry described above may grow even more before the close of 2012. UBS says the next generation iPhone (also known as iPhone 5) will easily be the hottest smartphone release of the year. “The prospects of a complete redesign should drive a stronger than average upgrade cycle for existing iPhone users and continue to encourage other smartphone and non-smartphone users to make the switch,” the report read.

The analysts at UBS said that Apple will likely sell 156.5 million iPhone units in the company’s fiscal 2013. That is up from a prior forecast of 149.5 million units.

Major Instant Messaging client, IM+, BeejiveIM and AIM now support Push Notification. Push notifications require the 3.0 firmware that was released last week.

Instant messaging apps always lacked this feature on iPhone and iPod Touch. Before release of iPhone 3.0, if we were to switch out of these apps, there was no easy way for the applications to notify you of an incoming message. Although, IM+ provided not-so-Push, which used to send you an email notification of IMs to make the absence of real Push better!

Apple released today that the company has sold over 1 million iPhone 3G S models over this past weekend.

The sales figure are the same as the last year’s 3G model launch weekend. The release also includes that OS 3.0 was downloaded 6 million times which is runs on existing 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch.

The press release includes a quote from Steve Jobs:

When iPhone 4 was first launched years ago, just days after its launch, many users began to notice 3G reception issues when placing their palm over the antenna part of their iPhone 4. This issue had been dubbed as the “antennagate” by bloggers.

There were numerous complaints and some lawsuits that Apple had to face over Antennagate issue. Apple has made free iPhone bumper cases available to everyone, which which according to Apple are a remedy to this issue. The issue was fixed in iPhone 4S manufactured later.

According to reports from CNET, one of those US class-action lawsuits is finally seeing a settlement:

The settlement comes from 18 separate lawsuits that were consolidated into one. All share the claim that Apple was “misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4–particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software.”

The lawsuit that is seeing a settlement is a total of 18 combined. All of those 18 lawsuits have the common message that Apple misrepresented the quality of its mobile antenna. As part of the settlement to this suit, every US customer who purchased an iPhone 4 is now entitled to $15 or free bumper from Apple.

A website for the settlement, www.iPhone4Settlement.com, will be launching in the coming weeks. Here, customers will be able to find out more information and where they can make their claim. At the moment, it is not clear if it applies to those who originally got a free bumper from Apple.

As a part of the settlement, Apple will be forced to send an email out to every single iPhone 4 customer by 30 April 2012. After receiving the email, customers will then have 120 days to make their claim.

While early iPhone 4S suffered from “antennagate”, now iPhone 4S seems to be free of this issue, as reported after a study done by Consumer Reports.

When Steve Jobs passed away, his fans and admirers all over the world came up with unique ways to pay tribute to him. It was almost like an unannounced competition where every fan wanted his tribute to be unique. This trend continued months after Steve Jobs’ demise.

Now a fan has designed an iPhone which can be seen as a tribute to Steve Jobs.

Antonio De Rosa has come up with yet a new iPhone concept. This concept revolves around a handset that De Rosa called the iPhone SJ because it was inspired by the late Steve Jobs.

According to De Rosa’s ADR Studio website, the concept is about taking the existing iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S body and reinvent it.

De Rosa has speculated that the concept of iPhone SJ could come packed with a dual-core A6 chip and a 10 megapixel camera. Most probably, Apple might put these inside the iPhone 5.

The full glass front panel which would pack a capacitive screen edge-to-edge has been described as the biggest feature of this concept. That screen has been built atop a lightweight polycarbonate body.

Apple is expected to bring the iPhone 5 to market later this year, possibly in October.

This year, many Apple products were loved and saw an increase in their sales. So let us have a look at the Apple Product Leaks of this year.

1. iPhone 4S

The pictures of some parts of iPhone surfaced on internet and people wondered what it was. Global Direct Parts called it an “iPhone 5″ . The detailed differences were found in the new antenna design. The changes were small. However, after the new iPhone was released, we all realized that what was seen on the net was first look of iPhone 4S design. That was way back in January, ten months before the release of iPhone 4S. The antenna design striking similarities with the Verizon iPhone which had not been released at the time, but the inclusion of the SIM slot meant this particular design was definitely for the iPhone 4S. Over the year, we continued to see the bits and pieces of iPhone 4S.

Later, Apple itself leaked the iPhone 4S name on iTunes beta, before the release of actual product.

2. iPad 2

Here we see the photo of a dummy model of iPad 2 that was shown at CES about 2 months before the iPad 2 was actually launched. The model was created on the basis of some leaked case designs to Chinese accessory manufacturers. This is the reason why the leaked iPhone 5 case designs seemed like a good possibility at the time.

3. iPhone 4S Camera Test

People got a fair idea of the capability of the camera in iPhone 4S. This photo was accidentally leaked by an Apple employee. The camera in iPhone 4S had clicked this photo.

4. iCloud Screenshot

This iCloud login screenshot was leaked several days before WWDC. However, it turned out to be accurate. It may have come from Apple’s internal staging area for the website. iCloud did not go live until two months later with essentially the same login screen.

5. Apple lost another iPhone

An Apple employee lost another prototype iPhone in a San Francisco bar this year. Though there were some initial doubts about the story, the San Francisco Police confirmed later that they did search for the device. The lost iPhone was never found. We are assuming that it represented a prototype iPhone 4S device. This likely explains why the prototype did not ever draw enough attention to be leaked/sold to any gadget sites.

6. Macbook Pro, Thunderbolt

The specs for the first Thunderbolt MacBook Pros got leaked, just few days before the launch.

7. Siri

The video that you are watching here was made before Siri was launched. Apple admitted that Siri had been leaked through this video. Some people doubted the accuracy of this video.

8. Fake iPhone 5 Video

This is a video of an “iPhone 5 Leak” on Apple’s website. This video amassed nearly 3 million views in YouTube ever since it was posted.

In the middle of an air, when you are in a plane, you would never want your phone, or anything in that matter to catch fire. There would a huge panic if that happens and you fear that any moment, the plane will be on fire.

Something like this happened in Australia. During a flight between Lismore and Sydney, an Australian passenger’s iPhone suddenly started emitting smoke. Moments later, it started glowing red.

The iPhone caught fire and the fire was successfully extinguished and the flight landed safely, with all passengers unharmed. However, it is still not known how and why did the fire start. Battery issues are being seen as a theory as the burnt phone was either an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S.

All right! Apple released iTunes Match on 14 November 2011. Now you can access your entire music library in iCloud on any authenticated device that runs on iOS 5. You can enable iTunes Match on your iPhone and iPad in the device’s settings.

After enabling iTunes Match, you can download and start playing at the given time on multiple devices (Apple devices).

Apple turned on iTunes Match last month. On 14 November 2011, toggle started working which was not the case last month. You need to start with enabling iTunes Match in the iTunes on your desktop. After that, you can enable the service on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. iTunes Match is also supported on Apple TV for music streaming.

However when enabled, iTunes Match would delete all the music you have stored locally. Deleted music would be replaced by iCloud tracks. Thus, when you enable iTunes Match, you would be warned to replace all the music in your device with all the music you uploaded to iCloud.

Thus, you need to follow following steps before you enable iTunes Match:

STEP1 - Create a backup of all the music that you did not get from iTunes on your computer.

STEP 2 - If your device has iOS 5, you should navigate Settings app to turn on iTunes Match. Go to the music section. iTunes Match would be found at the top of the screen. Swipe this toggle.

STEP 3 - When you swipe the toggle, you would be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. Enter them to enable your iTunes Match.

STEP 4 - You get two options once you enable iTunes Match in your device that has iOS 5. Turn on the “Show All Music” option. All the tracks that you have matched in iCloud will be viewable in your music app. You will see downloaded tracks as well as tracks from iCloud that you downloaded by tapping the cloud icon that was next to each track and album. If you leave the “Show All Music” option turned off, you would see only local music.

While using iTunes Match for the first time, you should leave “Show All Music” option turned on initially. When this option is off, you would see only that music that you have already downloaded. You can turn it off you want to hide your track list, if it becomes too long for you to see. You anyway would not want to download all the music in your device.

With automatic uploads of more music to iTunes Match, your device would refresh on its own to display the added tracks to you. If you turn on the “Show All Music” option, you will see all the available tracks that you can download.

24 Feb 1955 - Steve Jobs was born to a Syrian Muslim father Abdulfattah Jandali and Swiss Mother. He was given for adoption. Paul and Clara Jobs are his adoptive parents.

1960 - Jobs Family relocated to Palo Alto, heart of Silicon Valley.

1972 - Steve jobs met Steve Wozniak, an employee of HP while doing a summer job in that company.

1973 - Steve Jobs spent one semester at Reed College Oregon. Later, he dropped out.

1974 - Steve Jobs got a job at Atari. Later, he went to India on a spiritual trip to seek enlightenment. Many people believe this is when he adopted Buddhist philosophy and converted to Buddhism.

1975 - Jobs and Wozniak started working on APPLE I in Jobs’ Bedroom.

1977 - Apple got incorporated by its founders and a group of venture capitalists. It Unveiled Apple II, the first PC to generate color graphics. Revenue reached $1 million.

1983 - Apple launched LISA, only to pull it 2 years later. Steve Jobs lured John Sculley away from Pepsico Inc to serve as Apple’s CEO.

1984 - Iconic 1984 Macintosh computer went on sale. The first image shown on Macintosh computer was of Disney character Scrooge McDuck, better known as Uncle Scrooge of Duck Tales.

1985 - A conflict arose between Jobs and Sculley. Jobs and Wozniak resigned from their respective positions and left Apple.

Arab nations were quick to claim Steve Jobs as an Arab, conveniently ignoring the fact that Jobs’ Arab father Abdulfattah Jandali did not play any role in the life of Steve Jobs. For years, Jandali had been accused of abandoning Steve Jobs as a child and one section of media criticized him for the same. However, Jandali says that his father-in-law hated him because he was a Muslim. He did not like his daughter marrying a Muslim. However, one section of media continued to criticize Jandali, reasoning that even after knowing that Jobs was his son, he did not make any attempt to bond with him. Jandali says that he learnt about Steve Jobs being his son years later, when Jobs had achieved fame and an identity for himself.

According to the new patent, Apple is working on a new iPhone that will operate using a virtual Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card. Apple has said that providing improved ways to provide users, the ability to purchase and use wireless network services without SIM Card would desirable.

The patent of Apple shows two embodiments of a hardware architecture for a “virtual” SIM Card. According to the sketches and figures submitted at Patents office, SIM accessory device can enable inter alia, transitional embodiments and support for legacy architectures.

Legacy embodiments may find patticular value when frequent SIM-card “swappers” adopt them. Carriers that are slow might resist the upgrading for their existing system.

Apple Security chief retires
John Theriault, the Securtiy Chief of Apple, has taken retirement from his service and left the company. Many people believe that Theriault left due to the way the case of lost iPhone 4S protype had been handled. Months ago, the prototype was left in a Cava22 bar in San Fransisco. Apple had to contact police and the prototype had been found in a nearby house. The resident said that Apple security people were not actual officers.

Many of such products bite the dust if they are not good enough and fail to live up to the expectations of consumers. However, this does not seem to happen as the RAM of iPhone 4S is 512 MB, just what its predecessor had. Donald Mustard, creative director of Epic Games subsidiary Chair Entertainment revealed this in an interview, detailing Infinity Blade 2.

Given the fact that demo of Infinity Blade 2 was prepared for and unveiled as the keynote presentation of iPhone 4S, there is a possibility that Mustard may not be having the first hand information as there were reports some time back that Apple had provided the earlier versions of iPhone 4S for their developmental purposes.

However, even if this turns out to be true, it is not right to be judgmental at the moment as the other features of iPhone 4S are yet to be seen. RAM cannot be the only reason to frame a strong opinion.

A whole bunch of manufacturers are busy trying to create a killer tablet to be able to compete with the iPad. And for many of those manufacturers Google’s Android operating system is the way to go. The hopes are high, since Android already managed to take the leading market share in the smartphone market. A few years ago Apple’s iOS reigned supreme, but was forcefully dethroned by a never-ending series of competitive Android smartphones. But is the tablet business that comparable to the smartphone industry? And shouldn’t we compare it to a much older case, that isn’t that positive for other manufacturers but perhaps fits the bill way better?

The smartphone has existed for a very long time. I’m sure you can remember the first Blackberries, Symbians and Windows Mobile devices? If we look back at those now they seem rather pathetic compared to what we have today but still there was nothing better at that time. The businessmen chose a phone on any of these platforms and the average joe loved his Nokia, Samsung or Motorola dumbphone. And then Apple popped up with once again another smartphone, the iPhone. Initially not a success but it prove to be useful by being easier to work with and after all successful by targeting the right people. Google and other tech companies noticed this and also agreed that the smartphone landscape looked rather dull. So Google conquered many (mainly dumbphone) manufacturers with the open Android operation system and Microsoft completely threw out Windows Mobile and exchanged it for Windows Phone. The manufacturers that produced phones with these systems already proved to be trustworthy by having provided cellphones to the crowd for many years. Together with mainly Android it was a matter of making people dump their old dumbphone for a slightly more expensive smartphone. By creating a plethora of Android devices in all sizes, colors and prices the big manufacturers together with Google managed to launch Android to the top of the smartphone charts.

Since it are once again the same major players which are facing each other, isn’t it logical that the outcome will once again be the same for the tablet market? Not necessarily. Which brings me to that other market, the market of the portable media players.

When the iPod arrived it was revolutionary because it allowed people to store a lot of music on such a small device and take it everywhere with them. There were MP3 players before the iPod, but they were hardly capable of storing twenty tracks and suddenly there’s a device which allows people to take hundreds and later thousands of songs with them. The iPod was there to stay. There was no longer such thing as an MP3 player, there were only iPods. If you didn’t have an iPod you had nothing. This resulted in the competition trying very hard to compete with the iPod with decently working devices, but to no avail. They couldn’t do a thing, everyone wanted an iPod and nothing else. And since the iPod defined the pricing in its field, the steep price of early iPods was not an issue. Before Apple there was no brand which really excelled in this market.

Does this story ring a bell? 2010, Apple launched a wholly “new” device, the iPad. Just as in the Portable Media Player market, there were no real competitors. There were tablets before the iPad, but they were slow, unpractical and didn’t have a dedicated operating system. In addition to the physical flaws, they lacked marketing power to break through. Nowadays nearly everyone wants an iPad, there is no such thing as “a tablet” for the average joe. There are only iPads. Only after a year, the competition decided to wake up and do something about the iPad’s reign. Neilsen’s recent survey report shows the raise in the sale of smartphones. According to the report, Sale of smartphones in US have raised from 32% to 55%.

Also, the growth of smartphones has been due to the popularity of Apple iPhone and Google’s Android devices. At the end of 2010, the sales growth has increased by 17% and has remained steady till May this year with Windows Phone 7.

Neilsen also states that till this year end, the growth rate will remain constant. Verizon Wireless users are throwing their phones for iPhone. This can account the increased growth rate.
