Last month, we reported that jailbreaking might become illegal this year. Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was asking for everyone’s help in its fight to keep jailbreaking legal.

EFF suggested leaving a comment on the Copyright Office’s comment board to show your support.

The board closed on 10 February 2012. The Copyright Office has recently published everyone’s entries. Despite just 673 comments submitted, some big names turned out to defend jailbreaking, including well-known jail breaker and hacker Saurik.

Jay Freeman, also known as Saurik is the creator of Cydi. He filled up 6 pages with opinions and evidence on why jailbreaking should remain legal. Here is an excerpt from his comment:

“In order to bypass these restrictions, some developers have taken it upon themselves to help users escape the “jails” in which they feel manufacturers have them trapped. The resulting tools allow consumers of closed devices to install software from arbitrary parties and with no technical limitations. Depending on the device community, and the exact level of control granted, different terms are used for the process—”bootloader unlock,” “rooting,” “jailbreaking”— though the overall result is the same.

This process is not easy, and comes with many caveats. Upgrading the vendor-supplied software on the device can become more difficult, specifically as the vendor often attempts to re-assert their control during the process…”

Jailbreaking had been legalized in 2010. The decision to legalize jailbreaking is to expire this year. If the Copyright Office does not renew its exemption, jailbreaking will become illegal.

Almost two years ago, on 26 July 2010, the US government had legalized jailbreaking. It was a relief for those wondered about the legality of jailbreaking.

Over the last two years the freedom of jailbreaking helped fix many bugs in iDevices and presented many helpful tweaks to the users of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Most recently iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices were hacked. However, now if the reports published by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) are to be believed, jailbreaking may become illegal in near future.

The EFF published:

“Smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles are powerful computers with lots of untapped potential. Yet many of these devices are set up to run only software that’s been approved by the manufacturer. Modifying a device to run independent software – known as jailbreaking – is important to programmers, enthusiasts, and users. But jailbreaking creates legal uncertainty. Some device manufacturers claim that jailbreaking violates Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which carries stiff penalties.”

The ruling handed down by the Copyright Office in 2010 is due to expire this year. EFF is trying to persuade the Office to renew the exemption. Once jailbreaking becomes illegal, device manufacturers would have the right and power to pursue legal action against jailbreakers at will.

The EFF has provided link to the Copyright Office’s comment board. The Office needs to hear why jailbreaking is important. Some of the question being raised in this regard are as follows:

1. Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?

2. What’s your background (are you a developer, hobbyist, user, independent researcher, etc.)?

3. What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?

4. What limitations would you face if you weren’t able to jailbreak?

Comments should be marked as class “5? and are due by 5 PM ET 10 February 2012.

Obviously this app was fake. If one knew how jail breaking worked, he would have realized that. Apple has been against jailbreaking as jail breaking exploits cause security problems. However, after its presence in app store for four days, Apple found out that the app was fake.

The app has been pulled out from the app store.

The carried a price tag of $9.99 which means the app was developed and sent to app store by some con artist.

The question remains how was an app meant for jailbreaking was allowed to be available at app store.

iPhone Dev Team has released a bundle for PwnageTool for Mac. Earlier Apple has released Apple TV 2G Software Update 4.2.2 (iOS 4.3 – build 8F305) to fix some minor bugs. Apple has also added an audio output setting for switching to 16-bit audio for compatibility with some TVs and AV receivers.

Dev Team has provided the following details on their blog:

Apple released a minor update to iOS 4.3 for AppleTV2G (the IPSW name still says 4.3, but the build version changed from 8F202 to 8F305). @i0n1c was once again able to quickly port his original 4.3.1 untether (the exploit that wouldn’t die!) to this version.

If you do feel like updating to the “new” 4.3, you’ll need to drop this bundle into the correct folder in PwnageTool.app.

Earlier we have posted an article on AT&T trying hard to crack down on unofficial iPhone tethering – main reason why users jailbreak their iPhone.

Still people are clueless as how AT&T is able to easily identify unauthorized tetherers resulting in warning notices for customers but here Android Police has provided some insight into how AT&T is able to identify users who are using the unofficial tethering option.

Jailbroken iPhones typically use the same tethering technique as a standard iPhone, the one that’s already present in iOS. This method exposes tethering activity quite readily, because the iPhone, when in tethering mode, sends traffic through an alternate APN (AT&T access point/router) for the express purpose of identifying the traffic as tethered data. This makes it extremely easy for AT&T to identify whether or not an iOS device is utilizing tethering, and just how much of their data is consumed via tethering.

Some tethering applications for iOS make use of alternative methods and route tethered traffic through the phone’s normal data APN, but by and large, most jailbreakers stick with the stock application because it’s easy to use and doesn’t require any complicated setup. In fact, many iPhone users jailbreak for the sole purpose of avoiding AT&T’s tethering fees (for why, see next section). These are the people AT&T’s is going after.

Not long ago, JuneFabrics released an update to their PdaNet tethering app for iPhone which claims to be able to hide your tethering usage from carriers. I hope many developers are working hard to release updated version of their jailbreak apps to stay ahead of the cat and mouse game with AT&T.

Step 1.

Double click the Spirit application to launch it

Here are the instructions on how to jailbreak your iPad 1 on the 4.3.3 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows.

Step 1.
First you need to create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.3.3 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.3.3 (iPad 1): iPad1,1_4.3.3_8J3_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.

Step 2.
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPad.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.3.3 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step 3.
Open the Pwnage folder on your desktop once iTunes has finished updating your iPad to the desired firmware and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step 4.
Open the Pwnage folder on your desktop

Step 5.
Select the 4.3.3 firmware ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop then click Open.

Step 6.
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step 7.
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step 8.
You can select the jailbreak options you would like. Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue.

Step 9.
Make sure to plug your iPad into the computer and is OFF then click the Next button.

Step 10.
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Now you can release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 12.
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step 11.
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPad finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Not long ago, since we posted about Apple released iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, and now reports are coming up that the latest iOS software update can be jailbroken using Redsn0w released by the iPhone Dev team to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3.

iOS 4.3.3 includes fixes for the iPhone and iPad 3G location tracking bugs.

According to iphonehacks site:

“The trick is to point it to iOS 4.3.2 when Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 prompts you to select the corresponding firmware file instead of iOS 4.3.3.”

“However, the jailbreak is currently tethered (untethered only for iPhone 3GS with older bootrom) so it is advisable to wait for iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w to release updated version of their jailbreaking tools for iOS 4.3.3.”

It also looks like the i0n1c’s untether vulnerability that was used in PwnageTool and Redsn0w has not been fixed in iOS 4.3.3. Comex, member of the iPhone Dev Team revealed this via the following tweet:

It’s not clear when the tools that support the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 will be released but we expect it to be released soon.

There is going to be some competition in Jailbroken App Store as with the introduction of new alternative to Cydia Store known as Lima Jailbreak app store installer.

Infini Dev Team also reveal that they are working on alternate Cydia Store and that will allow users who have jailbroken their iOS device to install jailbreak apps and tweaks through iPhone’s mobile Safari browser.

Infini Dev Team has recently also taken up the responsibility of supporting Icy – one of the early jailbreak app installers developed by Ripdev and has already managed to get it to work on the iPad on iOS 4.3.2.

Lima is going to be a browser-based dpkg Installer. Meaning all you have to do is visit a website in safari and you have a fully fucntional package installer!

Here are instructions on how to jailbreak your second generation Apple TV using Seas0nPass.

Step 1.
Download the latest version of SeasonPass from here.

Step 2.
Double click to extract the archive you downloaded. Then double click the extract application to launch it.

Step 3.
Click OK to continue pass the tethered jailbreak warning.

Step 4.
You will be asked to sign in as an Administrator. Enter your username and password then click the OK button.

Step 5.
You will be asked to enable UI Scripting. Click the Enable button.

Step 6.
Click the Create IPSW button from the main screen.

Step 7.
Seas0nPass will now download the latest Apple TV firmware file

Step 8.
Seas0nPass will create a custom IPSW file for you.

4.3.2 (3G): iPod3,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw

Download Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 for Mac

Select your iPod touch from the list of devices on the left. Hold down option and click the Restore button.

Step 2.

Now you can connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPod from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.3.2 firmware ipsw. Select the choose button to continue.

Step 3.
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder.

Step 4.
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button.

Step 5.
Select the 4.3.2 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step 6.
Click the next button to continue after the firmware has been verified.

Step 7.
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step 8.
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.

Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue.

Step 9.
Please plug your iPod into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step 10.
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

“For future (tomorrow or today) White iPhone 4 users, limera1n is NOT patched and has no difficulty with current jailbreaks.”

Also for those wondering, i0n1c’s untether will work for the device as well.

i0n1c’s exploit is iOS based. Since the iPhone 4 runs the SAME iOS, its fine.

Here are the instructions on how to Jailbreak iPod touch 4G using PwnageTool for Mac on iOS 4.3.2

Step 1.
You need to make a folder called Pwnage on the desktop.

You will also need the 4.3.2 iPod Touch firmware ?4.3.2 (4G):

iPod4,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!

Step 2.
Double click to mount PwnageTool then drag the PwnageTool icon into the Pwnage folder.

From the Pwnage folder double click to launch the PwnageTool application.

Step 3.
Click to select the expert mode from the top menu bar.

Step 4.
Click to select your iPod touch and check-mark will appear over the image of the phone. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step 5.
Now you will be brought to the “Browse for IPSW” page. Click the Browse for IPSW… button.

From the popup window select your firmware from the Pwnage folder then click the Open button.

Step 6.
Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.

The General settings allows you to decide the partition size.

The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later.

Step 7.
Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab

Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.

The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step 8.
You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.

Step 9.
You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop

Your IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.

You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button

Step 10.
Once your ipsw has been built you will be asked to connect your iPod to the computer. Once it detects your device PwnageTool will guide your through the steps to putting your iPod into DFU mode.

Press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds.

Then release the power button and continue holding the home button for 10 seconds.

Once your iPhone is successfully in DFU mode, PwnageTool will prompt you to launch iTunes.

Step 11.
Once In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.

Step 12.
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created and click the Choose button.

Step 13.
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPod. This can also take up to 10 minutes. Once done you will be rebooted into jailbroken iPod OS 4.3.2!

iPhone Dev Team has released PwnageTool 4.3.2 for iOS 4.3.2 that include the untether jailbreak developed by iPhone expert Stefan Esser.

PwnageTool 4.3.2 will allow iPhone users to safety restore to a pre- jailbroken iOS 4.3.2 firmware. It will also help to retain their current baseband so that the users can ultrasnOw to unlock their GSM iPhone.

Dev Team has provided the following information on their blog:

PwnageTool 4.3.2 now includes the iOS 4.3.2 untether from @i0n1c.  (And look, the PwnageTool and iOS version numbers actually match!).

Here are the instructions on how to Jailbreak your iPod touch 4G for Mac using RedsnOw on 4.3.2 firmware.

Step 1.
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.3.2 firmware and place it in the same folder.

4.3.2 (4G): iPod4,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step 2.
Connect your iPod touch to the computer and launch iTunes.

Now select your iPod from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPod.

Again navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.3.2 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step 3.
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder.

Step 4.
Click the Browse button once RedSn0w opens

Step 5.
Select the 4.3.2 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step 6.
Click the Next button to continue once the firmware has been verified .

Step 7.
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step 8.
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like. But make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue.

Step 9.
Now plug your iPod touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step 10.
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Your iPod will now reboot

Jay Freeman aka Saurik posted a notice on the front page of Cydia citing an unfortunate problems plaguing no shortage of prominent digitat domains. Reddit, Quora, FourSquare, Hootsuite, the New York Times, ProPublica and Cydia. Raising some serious questions about the reliability of Amazon Web Services and all things cloud-related, as reported by ModMyi site.

ModMyi also state that Cydia pioneer Jay Freeman posted an update on Twitter regarding the unfortunate problem, “Amazon EC2 (which does host the primary Cydia website, purchasing, etc.) is currently experiencing severe issues: nothing I can do but wait,” he tweeted.

Again Jay Freeman updated the following message on the Cydia.

“Amazon EC2, which hosts Cydia’s internal website, has been having extreme issues for – 40 hours. This outage affects the ability to purchase paid products, the Theme Center, and Manage Account. I (saurik) have been sleeping in hour-and-a-half shifts since this outage began in order to keep a dialog open with Amazon “Premium Support” regarding this issue. Recently, enough access was recovered in order for me to modify the home page to add this message.”

“Unfortunately, Amazon’s status and ETAs have been confusingly vague and highly optimistic throughout the experience, causing me to be unable to make good decisions about disaster recovery choices. At this time, the latest news from Amazon AWS (as of two hours ago) was “that this will take 3-4 hours until full access is restored.” Meanwhile, Premium Support has asked engineering to prioritize recovering Cydia’s infrastructure. (For those interested in this sort of thing: this is the same Amazon EC2 outage that has been affecting other sites like reddit and foursquare.)”

consolidated.db acts as a cache for location data, and that historical data should be getting culled but isn’t, either due to a bug or, more likely, an oversight. I.e. someone wrote the code to cache location data but never wrote code to cull non-recent entries from the cache, so that a database that’s meant to serve as a cache of your recent location data is instead a persistent log of your location history. I’d wager this gets fixed in the next iOS update.
