IBM has managed to get an attention of jailbroken phones and near-field communications enabled phones as a high security risk which they feel could lead to a high rise in the number of hackers targeting mobile phones.

Quote:

Threat intelligence manager for IBM’s internal security X-Force said, ”A lot of users are hacking or jailbreaking their devices so that they can do things the manufacturer had never intended. In order to do that they need the same sort of exploit code a malicious person would need to remotely control the device, and this desire to jailbreak is driving [harmful] exploits.”

Tom Cross even added that users of jailbreaking devices can also presents a credible threat to corporate security and could lead to data theft or corporate network intrusion.

Grooveshark is an online music search engine and music streaming service which allows users to search for, stream, and upload music free of charge that can be played immediately or added to a playlist with the option to cache files for offline play.

Earlier, an iPhone app was available on the iTunes App Store, but was quickly removed as it presented to violate Apple’s iTunes Store Terms of Service. It has now returned on Cydia for free; however the app requires a VIP subscription ($3/month through Grooveshark).

Additionally the app does allow for 50 free plays before the subscription service is needed. If you’re using it, let us know how it’s working for you!

Now apparently jailbroken has been taken place to the latest update to Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 4.1 which brings about the new features such as Game Center, TV show rentals, iTunes’ “Ping” social music network, enhanced photo features and lot more.

The act of jailbreaking a phone that is exploiting a software bug to open the handset’s operating system to install programs normally prohibited by carriers and hardware manufacturers-was recently declared legal.

But that doesn’t mean that companies like Apple and AT&T are going to make it easy to jailbreak your iPhone. Apple has always comes with quick updates to the iPhone’s operating system and where hackers look for weaknesses in the software that can be exploited in order to jailbreak the handset.

According to the Register the jailbreak to the latest version of the operating system, iOS 4.1 were found in such a basic level of the code that Apple won’t be able to stop jailbreakers without making significant hardware changes.

A fortnight ago, there was first iPhone malicious worm discovered in Australia, and was harmless – did nothing except major. It just changed the background picture on the iPhone. Then came a new malware attack just a few days later, and today the third iPhone worm is discovered and it can steal your information.

The new worm only affects jailbroken iPhones which the SSH password hasn’t been changed and this worm appears to be isolated in the Netherlands. This worm appears to be far more serious than the first iPhone worm, since it can access and control the iPhone remotely without the permission of its owner. More specifically are those who uses the iPhone for internet banking with Dutch online bank ING at risk, since the worm redirects the bank’s customers to a site that looks like the original log-in screen, but it is fake and the information you give will be stored in a server in Lithuania.

According to The Loop, Apple has issued a brief statement regarding the latest malware attack:

“The worm affects only a very specific set of iPhone users who have jail broken their iPhones and hacked it with unauthorized software,” Apple spokesperson, Natalie Harrison, told The Loop. “As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones, and for good reason. These hacks not only violate the warranty, they will also cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”
We at AppleLunch recommends that you stay away from jailbreaks, since it can do more harm than good. The latest worm attacks proves our allegation right.

Or, a hacker could sit in an Internet café and let his computer scan all iPhones that come within the range of the wifi network in search of data. Hackers could even install this tool on their own iPhones, and use it to scan for jailbroken phones as they go about their daily business.

According to the most recent information from Pinch Media, 8.43% of Iphone users have jailbroken their phone. Of course, looking at the complete picture that is a small number of users, especially when you look at the percentage of non-jailbroken users — 91.57%.

But given that, those willing to jailbreak has risen from 8.0% up to the current 8.43% in just the previous week. Knowing that, one cannot help but wonder if the increase has had anything to do with the recent Google Voice controversy and the addition of GV Mobile in Cydia (the unofficial app store).

All in all this is an interesting stat to see, and one that I have not seen before, but one that I am going to try and keep and eye on in the future. According to Just Another iPhone Blog, the percentage of users was under 7% a few weeks back.

Volume Boost is a Cydia App that works only on jailbroken iPhone and supports firmware 2.2, 2.2.1 & 3.0.

Installing Volume Boost

The installation is very straightforward. Simply launch Cydia and search for “Volume Boost”. The application requires Winterboard for activation. So if you do not have Winterboard, Cydia will also install it for you.

After installation, Cydia will automatically reboot your iPhone. To enable volume boost, launch Winterboard and tap on “Volume Boost 3.0?. Then click HOME button to activate the volume boost. You’ll have to wait for 20 – 30 seconds for Winterboard to refresh.

From my test on iPhone 3.0, the Volume Boost only increases the speaker volume slightly but it does boost the volume of your headset. If you experience speaker volume issue, try to test this out and let us know if it works for you.

Those of you who have updated to iPhone OS 3.0 (jailbroken) might have noticed that your jailbroken apps (Apps installed outside from App Store) have stopped working. Even if you have tried reinstalling them they wont work because these apps require a patched version of MobileInstallation file on your iPhone. Here’s what you have to do to patch the mobileinstallation file on your iPhone, although some have reported that the Mobileinstallation beta file works. I have personally used this method below and can confirm that it works.

Method:

1. Go to “Cydia”.

2. Click on “Manage” tab on the bottom.

3. Now click on “Sources” as seen in the screenshot below:

4. Click on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a url source as seen in the screenshot below. Type “http://cydia.hackulo.us” and click on “Add Source”. Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

5. After installation is completed. Search for “AppSync” in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically patch your mobileinstallation file.

You should be now able to install all of your jailbroken apps on iPhone OS 3.0.
