ModMyi state;

Similar to the first wave of international launches one month ago, long lines (sometime 500 people or more) gathered at individual Apple stores awaiting the official kick-off of sales. Despite the rebuilding and recovery efforts still taking place in earthquake-ravaged Japan, the flagship Apple Store in Tokyo was described by some as a feeding frenzy, with consistent lines extending for blocks.

According to Foreign Associated Press:

16-year-old mainland Chinese student Dandy Weng waited in line for over 12 hours in a torrential downpour outside the Apple Store in Hong Kong. “I haven’t slept in 48 hours. I’m very tired but excited,” he told AFP. “I will be the first in China to have the iPad 2″, he added. “I can’t say how happy I am right now.”

Expecting the same enthusiasm on May 6th when the iPad 2 arrives in China, the world’s largest mobile community with an increasingly insatiable appetite for all things Apple. Although China will cap off the latest round of global roll-outs, Apple says that further international availability (for 2011) will be announced soon, as reported by ModMyi.

Reasons behind the delay of iPad 2

For sometime, we have been hearing about the shortages of component to manufacture the iPad 2 due to devastation in Japan now seems to be coming in place.

HIS iSuppli also reported that a company expected to supply the hardened glass overlay for the iPad 2 has admitted that one of its factories suffered earthquake damage and another was affected by fire.

According to iSuppli analyst Wayne Lam,

“There are two major types of hardened glass that could be used by the iPad 2. One is Corning’s Gorilla Glass, and the other is Asahi Glass Co.’s Dragontrail Glass. Both behave very similarly. They’re still glass, but they’re very flexible, hardened and scratch-proof.”

Steve Jobs has already sent a letter to Apple’s Japanese employees (and all others) to express his support following the earthquake.

To Our Team in Japan,
We have all been following the unfolding disaster in Japan. Our hearts go out to you and your families, as well as all of your countrymen who have been touched by this tragedy.
If you need time or resources to visit or care for your families, please see HR and we will help you. If you are aware of any supplies that are needed, please also tell HR and we will do what we can to arrange delivery.
Again, our hearts go out to you during this unimaginable crisis.
Please stay safe.

Steve and the entire Executive Team

Apple also enabled their disaster donations page again to make donations directly from within the iTunes Store.
But not only Steve and the Apple staff are there to support the Japanese people where needed. A lot of efforts are raised from within the iOS/Mac development community and in Apple related circles. If you are willing to contribute and maybe even get something in return here’s a list of all community efforts.

If you have any more causes which support Japan please mention them in the comments section and I’ll be more than happy to add them to the list.

iPad distributed to Sumo wrestlers.

It’s interesting! Now, iPad will be seen in wrestling arena nearby. Imagine wrestlers wrestling with the iPads. Imagination apart, it has been declared by the Japan Sumo Association they are going to distribute iPads to 51 sumo training “stables” in Japan.

The decision to introduce the iPad was sighted as many stable masters do not use computers, relying instead on fax or telephone to communicate. Wrestlers themselves often have trouble typing messages on keypads with their larger hands and fingers and end up pressing two or three keys at once on the PC and the phone.

If I am not wrong the association plans to spend about 3 million yen (over $35,000) on the iPads.

Finally, the association concluded to Financial Times that they hope that sumo wrestlers, who have generally been slow to adopt modern communications technology, will take to the iPad’s intuitive interface and larger touch-screen and eventually learn the generation next technology.

It’s nice to see that people want to adapt to new technology whatsoever may be the reason behind it. It’s good news for Steve’s company that such moves will give a push to manufacturing of those products.

Smartphone market in Japan has been taken over by iPhone at 46.1 percent. This is astonishing, as Japanese are used to alien cellphones and prefer their local mobile brands. Also, when iPhone was launched in Japan, it was highly disregarded. Now, iPhone has taken top 2 position.

The iPhone 3G is leading with 26.4% and 3GS with 21.5% at second point. Japanese say, iPhone’s best features are App Store and ease of use.
