But with so many new owners of the iPhone 3GS, and with so many new owners of the iPhone 3G (perhaps sold to them buy these new 3GS owners)…now is a good time to send out this general advisory.

If you update to Apple’s new software using the normal iTunes process, you will lose your ultrasn0w unlock. In fact you may lose it permanently, because for most people the baseband firmware cannot be reverted to a previous version (unlike the main application CPU firmware).
But don’t worry…our PwnageTool program let’s you update your main firmware without touching your baseband firmware, so you can still have the best of both worlds. But you must be diligent about saying “no” to your iTunes request this week to update your firmware.

Till now, you are more than aware of the unlocking iPhone methods that you can find on “the market”. The good news is that it is possible, the bad news is that you need to have a jailbroken devices in order to unlock your iPhone.

Some people would kill for an unlocked iPhone, but they are too scared to jailbreak their device. Well, it seems to be possible and here is the success story of the guys at TheAppleBlog :

In June, while over 1 million early adopters in the U.S. picked up their brand new iPhone 3GS devices, I was anxiously waiting for the official launch in my current country of residence, Finland. I picked up my iPhone 3GS in Helsinki just two weeks ago, when it was finally launched by Sonera.

Regarding Sonera, think of it as a less-repugnant version of AT&T. As the exclusive distributor of the iPhone over in Finland, Sonera has turned out to be a somewhat benevolent carrier. The carrier’s unlimited data plan is reasonably priced, and home hacking your iPhone to tether to your Macbook is positively encouraged.

And now I’ve discovered that Sonera is also happy to lend a helping hand in unlocking your old iPhone 3G. When the 3G was released last year, Sonera customers had to sign up for a two-year contract. When upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, those same customers are given the option to pay off the remainder of their original 3G contract. Paying off the contract, and thus completing the two years prematurely, entitles the customer to have their iPhone 3G unlocked.

The helpful assistant at the Sonera store made a note of my IMEI number and then passed it onto his boss — after that there’s a special piece of software that only his boss is authorized to use. This mystical application submits the IMEI to Apple, which in turn authorizes the device for unlocking.

I was advised that when the iPhone 3G was next synced with iTunes, it would be unlocked. Minutes later, back at home, I connected the iPhone 3G to iTunes and received a new carrier settings update. After downloading and installing the update, Apple’s official iPhone unlock screen appeared.

Going the legit route was a much more painless process than using a proxy SIM or the Dev Team’s unofficial unlock. Also worth noting is that, unlike some of the illicit approaches, this unlock is permanent: I’ll be able to keep updating the iPhone’s OS without losing the ability to use any carrier SIM in the device.
It was a surprisingly quick, easy and free unlock for me, although I’d be very interested to find out if any of our readers around the world have had similar success in unlocking their iPhones.

Apple has released an extensive document against Jailbreak. Probably, using the latest statements of hackers around the security vulnerabilities due to Jailbreak, they say that besides being illegal (really?!?! cmon… ), destroys all the security systems designed ad hoc ( might be true… im sure there will be a fix for everything tho… )

According to Apple, the process manipulates at will the Baseband, that phone and internet connections. An unauthorized modification that could interfere with the telephone, the geo-, and many other features.

The Jailbreak not manipulate the Baseband, but can only block the upgrade , thus leaving the older version, but the official Apple. As for the ECID Instead, Apple seems very informed on how to unlock, and with that statement, certainly try to block the intruizione of GeoHot. Purplera1n is always able to perform the Jailbreak of 3Gs by a certificate which can be obtained starting the ECID.

Apple talks about “change” of the ECID but the neither the DevTeam nor GeoHot they have provided the tools to change their identity. Simply does not exist, so the relation between declarations and actual operations are performed with the Jailbreak, are few.

Surely the security level of the device decreases with the very Jailbreak: We are all aware of this “problem” but we also know that it never reached the levels reported by Apple, which of course is “advertising” to try to eliminate it entirely .

This guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w. After jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS, you will be able to unlock it using UltraSn0w should you want to. Note that this tutorial is for the iPhone 3GS but the steps are the same for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Read this for more information about the jailbreak that best fits your needs. This was done on a PC but I assume the steps are the same for Mac and Linux.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS Guide:

1. First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. If you have to update iTunes, make sure you restart your computer after installing the latest iTunes.

2. On your desktop, create a folder called “jailbreak iPhone 3GS” or whatever you want to call it. In this folder, download firmware 3.0 for your iPhone 3GS and RedSn0w 0.8 from here. Unzip the RedSn0w folder.

3. Launch RedSn0w and browse for the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in the previous step. RedSn0w should be processing the chosen firmware and tell you that the IPSW was “successfully identified”. Click Next.

4. RedSn0w will start working for a few seconds and then will ask you what you would like to install. You can install Cydia and Icy. I highly suggest you only install Cydia. Choose Cydia and click Next.

5. We’ll now have to connect the iPhone 3GS in recovery mode. To do so, unplug it from your computer, turn it off and wait a few seconds. Then hold the home button while plugin your iPhone to the USB cable. Keep holding the home button until the “Connect to iTunes” image appears.

6. Your iPhone will then go into recovery mode and that’s when the magic happens… RedSn0w will install the jailbreak, which may take a few minutes.

7. Your iPhone will restart and install a bunch of stuff. . Even though RedSn0w says “Done!”, wait until the very end to click “Finish”.

8. After a few minutes, your iPhone will restart. Then click “Finish”.

9. Go to your iPhone springboard and you should see the Cydia icon. Note that the icon may be on the second or third page on your springboard.

10. Done!

It took me about 10 minutes to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS, including time to take screenshots and write this tutorial. It was from far the quickest and most painless jailbreak.

Remember we warned you to stay away from any updates to 3.1 if you want to be able to jailbreak or unlock your 3GS.

Well this is an additional message to all you 3GS owners that would like to jailbreak your device sometime soon, but this advice comes with a warning! A warning that if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, you will not be able to use Ultransn0w, so please re-read and double check this warning at the bottom of this post before proceeding.

During the restore process iTunes nicely keeps these oh-so-top-secret-files in a lovely accessible place for us to copy out and backup, that place? /tmp on Mac OS X or %TEMP% on Windows. Thanks Apple — handy!

The downside to this approach is that you actually need to go through the restore process to get these signed files, which has risks if you are anywhere near 3.1 or 3.1 beta

Jump the break for instructions on how to get the iBEC and iBSS of your iPhone 3GS.

These instructions will show you how to capture your iPhone 3GS iBEC and iBSS which will be required for a future 3GS jailbreak on a Windows computer. Sorry Mac owners…

1. Create a folder called “Jailbreak 3GS” or whatever name you want on your desktop. Download the firmware 3.0 for iPhone 3GS from our iPhone downloads page. Keep this folder open.

2. Go to Start > Run > and enter %temp%

3. Your temp folder will show up on the screen. Now make sure hidden folders are showed, and that the items in the folder are sorted by “date modified”, from most recent to oldest. Keep this folder open.

4. Launch iTunes and plug your iPhone to your computer.

5. Now we need to put your iPhone into DFU mode, in order to capture your iBSS and iBEC.

6. Make sure iTunes is opened and that your iPhone is plugged in. To put your iPhone into DFU mode, press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time for 10 seconds. After exactly 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button. Keep holding the home button until iTunes tells you it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

7. Click OK and hold down the Shift key and click Restore at the same time. A window will show up. Browse to the “Jailbreak 3GS” folder you created in step 1 and select the iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file.

8. You will get a warning message. Click Restore.

9. As the restore process is going on, look at the Temp folder. A new folder will show up with a name resembling Per149.tmp (note: your name might be different but look similar to this). Copy this folder and paste it in your Jailbreak 3GS folder. Remember, you have to act fast as this folder will soon be deleted.

10. Once the restore has completed, iTunes will let you either set up your iPhone as a new phone, or restore from backup. I chose to restore from backup so all my settings are intact.

You’re done! You have successfully captured your iBEC and iBSS.To make sure you’ve done this properly, look inside the Per149.tmp folder you copy/pasted. Go to Firmware > dfu >and you should see 2 files: iBEC.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu and iBSS.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu.

Keep them somewhere on your computer for a future jailbreak.

It took me 2 tries to make this work. The first time, it would only save my iBEC. Make sure you act quickly when the folder appears in your temp folder.

A tool has been released to automatically grab your iBEC and iBSS but I haven’t tried it so I can’t tell you if it works or not.

Good luck

All iPhone 3G got excited about this release as ultrasn0w. Unlike the previous unlock solution “yellowsn0w”, which can only unlock iPhone 3G with baseband 2.28.00, ultrasn0w can unlock any iPhone 3G with the latest baseband 4.26.08.

That means, for those of you with baseband 2.30.xx, you can now simply upgrade to iPhone 3.0 OS and get it unlock using ultrasn0w.

Ultrasn0w is available for download via Cydia and it’s very straightforward to use. As I received a number of emails about how it should use, however, it’s always good to write a step-by-step guide that benefits everyone.

Note: This unlock guide is for iPhone 3G only. For iPhone 2G unlock, you do not need to use ultrasn0w. You can use PwnageTool (for Mac) or Redsn0w (for Windows) for the unlock.

First, you need to jailbreak the iPhone 3G

Before you can download and use Ultrasn0w, the very first thing you need is to jailbreak your iPhone 3G. For those who do not know about jailbreak, this process ensures you can install Cydia and other 3rd party applications on your iPhone, which is the prerequisite of iPhone 3G unlock.

After you complete the jailbreak, come back here and continue with the unlock.

Okay, let’s unlock iPhone 3G

Once you’ve got the iPhone jailbroken, you can now follow these procedures to unlock the iPhone using ultrasn0w.

Note: For T-mobile US user, please ensure you disable 3G service before proceeding. To disable 3G, go to Settings -> General -> Network on your iPhone and turn off 3G.

1. Launch Cydia.

2. Tap “Manage” and then tap “Sources”

3. Tap “Edit” button and then tap “Add” button.

4. Type in “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com” for the cydia/apt URL and tap “Add Source”. Cydia will then verify the URL and register the repository URL. When complete, tap “Return to Cydia” to continue.

5. You’ll find the new URL registered. Tap “Done” and then tap “Search”.

6. Type in “ultrasn0w” to search for Ultrasn0w application. Once found, tap on “ultrasn0w”.

7. Next, tap “Install” to kick off. Then tap “Confirm” to confirm the installation.

8. Cydia will then download the ultrasn0w application. When complete, tap “Return to Cydia”.

9. Next, press Home button to go back to home screen and power off your iPhone.

10. Power ON your iPhone and ultrasn0w will be automatically started to unlock your iPhone.

Good luck for your unlock. Please feel free to leave comment and share your iPhone Unlock experience.

This is a compriehnsive step-by-step guide which lets you Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone 3.0

What you need: Your iPhone, your Mac or PC, iPhone and the USB adapter cable

Note: This works well for iPhone 2G and 3G. If you wish to unlock and Jainbreak 3GS, you would have to wait.

Let’s Start!

Step 1)

You need to jailbreak it first, and that requires redsn0w, a Mac/PC jailbreaking program. Download the official redsnow torrent files HERE, then download redsn0w via your Bittorrent client of choice. Back up your iPhone to your computer before moving forward.

Step 2)

Open redsn0w. Follow its instructions to select your .ipsw (iPhone firmware) file. On Macs, you can find the file at Home Folder/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates. Or just download a new one from HERE. Once you’ve found your .ipsw, move on.

Step 3)

Redsn0w will ask if you want to install Cydia or Icy or Both. (These are apps that can load programs on jailbroken phones and will be needed to unlock the phone later.) JUST INSTALL CYDIA, NOT BOTH. Once the .ipsw file is patched, make sure to plug in your iPhone then turn it off while still plugged. When you see the screen “Click NEXT when your iPhone is both OFF and plugged in…” go on to the next step.

Step 4)

Now you need to put your phone into DFU mode to load the patched firmware. You’ll hold the top power button for two seconds, then hold the Home button with it for 10. Then you’ll release the top button and just hold Home for 30 or so. If you mess up you can just try again, but you need to pay attention, so make sure you’re holding your phone and watching the computer screen when you hit “next.” Redsn0w will guide you through the pattern of holding the top and home buttons in timed succession. If you’re successful, redsn0w will inform you that your phone is being jailbroken and you can stop holding the Home button. If you’re not, redsn0w will reset the process and you’ll probably need to manually restart your iPhone.

Step 5)

Wait as the jailbroken firmware loads onto your iPhone. (You’ll see a disk drive on the phone’s screen, then this cute pineapple graphic as it installs.) After a few minutes, the phone will reboot just as it does with official firmware. Congratulations, your phone is jailbroken! Most of you are done—just load Cydia (which is now an app on your iPhone) and search for apps you’d like to install. Others need to continue this tutorial for the unlock.

Step 6)

If you want to unlock your original or 3G iPhone so it can take a T-Mobile or international SIM, follow these next steps. You’re done with your computer, so make sure your iPhone is on a Wi-Fi connection. We’re going to use Cydia to download and install ultrasn0w, which unlocks your iPhone.

Step 7)

Cydia will first ask what kind of interface you’d like. I’m no hacker, so I chose the graphical view. Then Cydia will want to download at least 2 Essential Upgrades. Let it by choosing “complete upgrade.” If Cydia’s successful, you’ll see a bunch of install code and the option to “Close Cydia (Restart).” Hit that button. (Note: If you are getting errors in this step, it may be because you installed both Cydia and Icy. If you did that, restore your iPhone with official 3.0 firmware via iTunes and start the process over.)

Step 8 )

Reopen Cydia. Go to Manage -> Sources -> Edit – > Add and then enter “repo666.ultrasn0w.com” in the text field. This should add ultrasn0w as a Cydia source so that you can download the ultrasn0w software. Choose to return to Cydia and then click “Done”.

Step 9)

Click the repo666.ultrasn0w.com listing under your Sources. Click repo666.ultrasn0w.com again at the next screen (redundant, we know). Then click Install. You’ll see a black screen with some text and, after a few seconds, it should read “Complete”. Reboot your phone with your new SIM.

Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked!
